Free Kindle Books 8-31-13

PLEASE. Do everyone a favor and write an Amazon review if you end up reading a book (or trying to and giving up in disgust). It does not have to be much. Just tell what you think of the book. By the way, many times I have found the 1 and 2 star reviews on self published works to be far more revealing about the book than the more stellar reviews. Reviewers need gratification too, so if a review is helpful to you, please click on the voting button to indicate it was helpful.

Most times these books are only free for a day or two, so you have to grab them while you can. Worry about whether you really want to read it later if it seems interesting. And be careful, they can change from free to not free at any time. I have also decided to list books for no more than 3 days in a row to avoid cluttering up the posts, unless there is some reason I think the book deserves extra attention.

From the top 100 free list
As is typical, there are also several religious and recipe books on the list today, along with the usual assortment of romance, porn and near porn. I don't call them out because they don't interest me. Click on the link above and search through the Free List Tab if you are interested in such books.

Shadow Bound (Shadow series)
Death
Some people will do anything to avoid it. Even trade their immortal souls for endless existence.

Wraiths
Secretly, inexorably, they are infiltrating our world, sucking the essence out of unsuspecting victims with their hideous parody of a kiss.

Segue
Adam Thorne founded the Institute to study and destroy his monster of a brother, but the key to its success is held in the pale, slender hand of a woman on the run. There is something hauntingly different about Talia O’Brien, her unknowing sensuality, her uncanny way of slipping into Shadow.

Twilight
This is the place between life and what comes after - a dark forest of fantasy, filled with beauty, peril, mystery. And Talia is about to open the door.

Unless you have been living in a bubble over the past few years, you would have found it very hard not to have noticed the mounting excitement attached to the Paleolithic diet. People appear to be discussing our early hunter-gatherer ancestors lately and stating that there is growing evidence that their very diet could be of benefit to us today—both in helping us to lose weight and for our overall health and well-being.
This very e-book will guide you through the details of the Paleo diet and in turn introduce you to all of the concepts of this program that indicate that it really is an excellent choice for both weight loss and overall optimal health.
You will see that the Paleo diet is firmly based on sound research that was conducted by true professionals in the field of diet and nutrition; moreover, you will learn how evolution and our body’s basic morphology suggest that the diets of our very ancient ancestors remain so beneficial to us to this very day.

Forget the Atkins diet and other potentially injurious programs, the Paleo diet introduces you to an entirely safe regime; one that you would be wise to adapt to the rest of your life in some shape or form. This diet enables you to lose weight whilst at the same time truly optimising your health!

Home Canning Food For Beginners (Preparedness Guides)
Home Canning for Beginners is the perfect read for anyone who owns a garden, and wants to capture its bounty for savoring in the winter months, but just is not sure how to go about it. This informative eBook details the principles of canning, while touching on the historical significance of feeding families for centuries with the time honored practice. With a clear explanation regarding the importance of the using the proper jars and lids, and the age old art of recycling and reusing the exceptional glass storage containers that make this process a low cost investment, this guide outlines all of the necessities of home canning.

Along with thoroughly describing the proper technique for filling the jars, the author – Casey Watkins – provides the reader with a list of suitable produce that can be jarred successfully and store for future enjoyment. This outline allows the reader to pick the suitable produce that will grow in their geographical region, while providing tips on how to safely and accurately preserve them for future consumption.

Leaving no stone left unturned, there are two processes that are described in detail within the chapters of this exceptional account of home canning techniques. “Water Bath” canning – also known as boiling water canning – and pressure canning are both chronicled in an easy to read, step by step display, so first time canners can easily get the hang of this time honored tradition of food preservation without a single issue. Practice, as they say, makes perfect, but this guide gives first time canners the advantage over those before them who picked up the process through painstaking trial and error.

With assuring tips on kitchen safety, and testing the jars to ensure they are properly sealed, this book allows novice canners to become practical experts in the field after their initial jarring session. Home Canning for Beginners provides efficient tips for storing the jars when the process is complete, and functions as a blueprint for operating a functional kitchen using all of the pragmatic tools any canning operation needs to be successful.

Home Canning for Beginners provides insight on not just the actual canning process, but how to spot spoilage that results from damaged jars and an explanation of why everything tastes so much better when you take pride in your work. With a clear explanation on how to stay focused – or taking a break to avoid feeling overwhelmed – this guide is a practical, straight-forward and deliberate explanation of all the things that make home canning such a popular and positive experience for everyone who reads it.

This easy to read eBook provides tips on sharing your bounty with friends and family, and how to find recipes for everything from jarring fresh salsa to pickling cucumbers. Home canning is an exceptional way to save money while eating fresh foods that contain no additives or preservatives, which is something everyone can appreciate. With an explanation of the tools you need to succeed in home canning, this eBook serves as a step by step guide to harvesting your garden and enjoying it well into the winter months and beyond.

Archeologist David Hyden is hell-bent to disprove his Biblical archeologist father’s religious theories. After his father is found dead at the center of Stonehenge with a strange glowing spiral engraved into his palm, David decides to challenge his father’s theory that Maeshowe—a passage grave ruin in Stenness, Scotland—possesses metaphysical powers. However, the morning after his arrival in Stenness, David wakes to find everyone else in town is dead.

NATO pathologist Brynne Thatcher is trained to recognize the subtle features of subsonic death, a unique forte and her only leg-up in a career dominated by men. Sound is the ideal weapon: an indiscriminate killer that leaves almost no trace upon its victims. She is testing an acoustic cannon in the grasslands a short distance from Stenness. Thatcher is certain her weapon caused the Stenness massacre, but all bets are off when she pinpoints Maeshowe as the source of deadly noise. The ruin erupts with low-frequency sound every 77 hours. Each explosion is larger and deadlier than the last. The only clues to stopping Maeshowe are the spiral petroglyph glowing inside its central chamber and the lone survivor, David.

Investigating the connection between the two glowing spiral symbols, Thatcher and David uncover Brenton’s most bizarre theory: There are four locks and four keys lost throughout antiquity. Any man who finds a matching lock and key will gain one of the powers of the Four Horsemen of Apocalypse (Conqueror, War, Plague, and Death). Displacement of a key awakened the passage grave. Unless the “key” is placed into the petroglyph “lock,” the ruin will kill every living thing.

Finding the key won’t be easy. A clandestine brotherhood known as the Abaddon is sworn to protect the keys. As Maeshowe’s eruption spreads across northern Europe, the leadership of the Abaddon crumbles. A new leader of the dark society seeks to become Conqueror, and a race to the Apocalypse begins.

In Fallujah, during a particularly difficult time in the Iraq War, a group of Marines are deployed on a tour that will bring them closer together, while threatening to tear them apart. The Delta Company Outlaws are a group of Light Armored Reconnaissance Marines deployed in 2004 to one of the most hostile war zones in the world. Through the memoirs of one Marine, this touching story encapsulates the drama surrounding everyday life during the Iraq War. With a bond formed through blood, sweat, and tears, a group of unfamiliar Marines will come together stronger than family.

Memoirs of an Outlaw: Life in the Sandbox is a dramatic new take on the Iraq War that focuses more on the personal aspects of war rather than exclusively on combat. With a touching approach to the camaraderie, daily life, and devastating losses, this enlightening memoir by Robert M. Tanner delves into the brotherhood that’s formed throughout a deployment while documenting the combat experiences and daily life of a Marine. Using personal experiences, this engaging story hooks readers with drama, action, and honesty while painting an illuminating picture of both the funny and tragic sides of war.

Inspired by a bond that’s stronger than blood, Memoirs of an Outlaw began as a therapeutic way to document wartime experiences and eventually led to a full-fledged memoir. Deciding to focus on the daily life and camaraderie of war, the story captures the tension, drama, and bonding that comes with combat and living in a hostile environment far away from home. By focusing on the humanistic side of the armed forces, Memoirs of an Outlaw perfectly captures a unique moment in time during an extraordinarily challenging part of the war.

Sixteen years ago, Camille Miller left behind her life as an assassin in order to raise her daughter Emma. But now, when her billionaire father is found brutally murdered, she must tap into old instincts to learn who killed her father and why.

The suspects? Her six siblings, each so desperate for their father's money that they'd kill for it.

What Camille doesn't see coming is Emma's plan to solve the mystery first. Or P.I. Marty Spellman's assignment, which is to find Camille or risk the deaths of those dearest to him. Over the course of one day, all three players, plus Spellman's teenaged daughter Beth, find themselves in a race to the finish. Nobody's goals are what they appear to be. Twists abound. The Messiah Matrix
First Jesuit Pope predicted in THE MESSIAH MATRIX!

To what lengths would the Vatican go to suppress the secret origins of its power? Current papal politics has made this thriller eerily prophetic! The Messiah Matrix is a myth-shattering novel whose protagonists delve into the secrets of the past—and expose the fundamentalists who hide them still.

A renowned scholar-monsignor is killed in Rome while a Roman coin is recovered from a wreck off the coast of ancient Judea. It’s up to his young American protégé--a Jesuit priest--and a vivacious, brilliant archaeologist to connect these seemingly disparate events and unravel the tapestry that conceals in plain view the greatest mystery in the ecclesiastical world. Together they pursue their passion for truth—while fighting to control their passion for each other. What they uncover is an ancient Roman imperial stratagem so controversial the Curia fears it could undermine the very foundations of the Roman Catholic faith--much like the secrets emerging from the Vatican in today's news.

From the ancient port of Caesarea to Rome's legendary catacombs and the sacred caves of Cumae, this contemporary novel follows their exhilarating quest to uncover the truth about the historical existence of the real "Christian Savior."

Classical scholar and Yale Ph.D. Dr. Kenneth John Atchity is the only author alive today capable of creating this literary and historically-based spellbinder.

Disappearance at Mount Sinai (Pat O'Malley Historical Mysteries)
As seen in the Jewish Daily Forward!

What if the anti-Semites, racists, and terrorists wanted the final revenge following the Civil War? How do you stop them from committing the worst atrocity?

It's 1866 in New York City. Civil War Vet and Detective Pat O'Malley's biggest case returns him to the deep, dark South to search for the kidnapped wealthiest inventor and entrepreneur in America. But the widening gyre of anti-Semitism and racism pulls him down into the pit of hell itself. Disguised as an Oxford England Professor, O'Malley infiltrates the anti-Semites' group and travels with his partners, Becky Charming and his father, Robert, down to a Collierville, Tennessee mansion.

At the crux of this case are a Jewish father and his five-year-old son, Seth. They have developed a unique bond that relies on Jewish folklore and a belief that they are Mazikeen, half-angel and half-human, born from the loins of Adam's strange female cohorts during the 130 years he was banished from the Garden. Will O'Malley find Dr. Mergenthaler before it's too late? What does this world-wide eugenics group have planned for the mongrel races? Read Jim Musgrave's Disappearance at Mount Sinai, the second mystery in the series of Pat O'Malley Mini-Mysteries.

This is the second historical mystery in the popular Detective Pat O’Malley series. You can read more about this series and sign-up for the newsletter at the Pat O’Malley Mini-Mysteries web site. The second mystery was a featured “summer reading” book at the Jewish Daily Forward because it deals with the “mazikeen,” which are half-human and half-angel beings from Jewish folklore. Both of the mysteries so far in the series have Poetic (as in Edgar Allan Poe) style and supernatural elements that readers enjoy.

These mysteries are all short but powerful reads (following Poe’s dictum that a work, to be effective, must be readable in one sitting). The third mystery will be a “battle royale” between two of the most popular brothel madams in 1860s New York City. Come join the fun with Detective O’Malley and his partner, Madame Rebecca Charming, as they battle crime and Tammany Hall city corruption. As author Jim Musgrave says in his app for iPad, iPhone and Android, “Carry 1860s New York City around in your pocket or purse!”

NY Times Bestselling Author, former Green Beret and West Point Graduate, Bob Mayer.

"A pulsing technothriller. A nailbiter in the best tradition of adventure fiction." Publishers Weekly ref Bob Mayer

Horace Chase arrives on Hilton Head Island to pay his last respects at the Intracoastal Waterway where his late mother’s ashes were spread and to inspect the home his mother left him in her will. He’s been recently forced into retirement, his divorce is officially final, and now he’s standing in the middle of the front yard of his ‘new’ house where a tree has crashed right through the center of it.

What could possibly go wrong?

Within six hours of arriving on Hilton Head, Chase is exchanging gunfire with men who’ve kidnapped a young boy and tried to grab the boy’s mother, Sarah Briggs. Soon he’s waist deep in an extortion plot to funnel a hundred million dollars of Superbowl on-line gambling money into an offshore bank account or else the boy dies.

Dave Riley has long retired from the military and living peacefully on sleepy Dafuskie Island off the coast of South Carolina. Sort of. Actually he’s bored, feeling old, and just a bit cranky running his deceased uncle’s small-time bookie operation.

Horace Chase, meet Dave Riley. Riley-Chase.

Chase and Riley assemble a team of misfits and eccentrics as they take on the powerful Russian mob in the lawless tidal lands of the Low Country to get the boy back.

Meet Erin: Chase’s long-ago summer fling, now a veterinarian and not interested in men any more, at least that way. But her suturing skills and her knowledge of the island bring assets the team needs. Especially after Chase’s first visit with the Russian requires a bit of the former.

Meet Gator: an ex-Ranger, iron-pumping, fire-breathing hulk of a redneck, with a soft spot in his heart for Erin, and steroids burning in his muscles to hurt people. As long as Riley and Chase point him in the right direction, the rest of the populace should be all right.

Meet Kono: a Gullah, descendant of the free slaves who fled to the barrier islands in the 19th century and developed their own culture. He nurses his own pain and secrets, but heeds Chase’s call to renew their childhood friendship. Especially when he learns the target is the Russians.

It adds up to a fiery confrontation to rescue the young boy, and settle some old scores.

But Riley and Chase need to remember a basic tenet from their days in covert operations: Nothing is ever as it appears.

In New York, Walt Lawson is about to lose his girlfriend Vanessa. In Los Angeles, Raymond and Mia James are about to lose their house. Within days, none of it will matter.

When Vanessa dies of the flu, Walt is devastated. But she isn't the last. The virus quickly kills billions, reducing New York to an open grave and LA to a chaotic wilderness of violence and fires. As Raymond and Mia hole up in an abandoned mansion, where they learn to function without electricity, running water, or neighbors, Walt begins an existential walk to LA, where Vanessa had planned to move when she left him. He expects to die along the way.

Months later, a massive vessel appears above Santa Monica Bay. Walt is attacked by a crablike monstrosity in a mountain stream. The virus that ended humanity wasn't created by humans. It was inflicted from outside. The colonists who sent it are ready to finish the job--and Earth's survivors may be too few and too weak to resist.

Maverick federal employee Sammy Pintella, obsessed with uncovering the fate of her MIA father, makes a startling discovery while rifling through some inactive government files. A dozen, faded black and white photos seem to point to the existence of a secret US Military base built in the frozen wastelands of Antarctica during the height of the Cold War.

Aided by Special Forces veteran Dave Riley, she heads for Antarctica. But they aren’t alone. Spies, North Koreans and other shadowy forces are also en route, because deep inside Eternity Base is something people will go to extreme lengths to get: a cache of nuclear warheads.

“A federal employee intent upon discovering the truth about her missing in action father stumbles upon a closely-held secret about an Antarctic military base - a base illegally constructed and which has been kept a secret by a serious of murders. When she and her reporter sister fly to the base for an in-depth probe, murder begins to stalk them in this tense novel. Unlike most military stories this will appeal to general audiences as a fine thriller. Highly recommended, indeed.” -- Midwest Book Review

Black Onyx - A Superhero Thriller (The Black Onyx Chronicles)
[#25 - 2nd day. Kind of comic bookish.]

The End of the Euro: The Uneasy Future of the European Union
The End of the Euro begins with an overview of the birth of the euro itself. Understanding this history is essential to understand the anomalies built into the project from the beginning. These anomalies form the subject of chapter two, along with how they led to the situation that turned Greece, Portugal, and Spain into euro-destroying economic disaster areas. Chapter three shows how this was not an unforeseeable situation, as Europe’s history is filled with earlier failed attempts to build monetary unions. Chapter four is focused on Germany, by far the most important country within EMU, and why the chances of Germany leaving the union are much higher than is generally assumed. The book concludes with an analysis of what lies in wait for the remains of the monetary union — and for a deeply divided and troubled continent in general. Either the EMU transforms itself fundamentally or it disintegrates.

Free From Stackpole.
Stackpole puts a book or two up for free periodically.  I have read several of their free books. Some interesting stuff. Most of what I have seen is WWII German military history, with varying quality of translation, some other military history from lesser known units, along with some fishing and other outdoors oriented books.

The Barefoot Sisters Southbound (Adventures on the Appalachian Trail)
"Rarely will you find books that explore the human emotions of a long-distance trek so honestly and clearly." --Roger Williamson, Campmor, Inc.
"Highly recommended." --trailsbib.blogspot.com

From the book: "We stood for a moment before the venerable signpost marking the summit. Scored with graffiti and the constant onslaught of weather, it stands perhaps three feet high, a wooden A-frame painted Forest Service brown with recessed white letters:
KATAHDIN 5268 ft.
Northern Terminus of the Appalachian Trail
Below this were a few waypoints: Thoreau Spring, 1.0, Katahdin Stream Campground, 5.2. At the bottom of the list: Springer Mountain, Georgia, 2160.2. More than two thousand miles. It was simply a number, too large and incomprehensible to have any bearing on me. The farthest I had ever walked in a day was ten miles and that was with a daypack. Now I was contemplating a journey of months, covering thousands of miles. All of a sudden, there on the summit with the clouds screaming past us, it didn't seem like such a great idea.
I turned to my sister, half-expecting to see the same doubt mirrored in her face. But her eyes were shining, and she smiled with an almost feral intensity. It was a look I would come to know all too well over the next year and a half, and it meant, I am going to do this and no one had better try to stop me. 'We're really doing this,' she shouted over the wind's howl and the lashing rain. 'We're hiking the Appalachian Trail!'"

At the ages of twenty-five and twenty-one, Lucy and Susan Letcher set out to accomplish what thousands of people attempt each year: thru-hike the entire 2,175 miles of the Appalachian Trail. The difference between them and the others? They decided to hike the trail barefoot. Quickly earning themselves the moniker of the Barefoot Sisters, the two begin their journey at Mount Katahdin and spend eight months making their way to Springer Mountain in Georgia. As they hike, they write about their adventures through the 100-mile Wilderness, the rocky terrain of Pennsylvania, and snowfall in the Great Smoky Mountains--a story filled with humor and determination. It's as close as one can get to hiking the Appalachian Trail without strapping on a pack.

THE GREATEST MYSTERY OF MANKIND...

The Piri Reis map. The most enigmatic artifact in existence. Drawn by an Ottoman Admiral in 1513 and taken from much more ancient maps, it displays sections of Antarctica that could only have been visible from the air before the great ice age nearly 6000 years ago.

Explorer and treasure hunter Dillon Mentzer believes the information in the map was discovered by an advanced civilization now lost to history. When word reaches him that an expedition is being mounted by a man claiming to have discovered a lost city, Dillon takes the chance and joins with him.

THE MOST POWERFUL WEAPON OF THE ANCIENT WORLD...

What Dillon finds is a civilization more advanced than our own with a terrible secret: a weapon that has remained hidden for sixty centuries. When the weapon, dubbed "Black Onyx," is exposed, Dillon decides it's too powerful to leave and takes it back with him.

AN EVIL THAT WILL STOP AT NOTHING...

When the Black Onyx is revealed, El Sacerdote, the most powerful man in the Juarez cartel, learns of its power. He will destroy anyone and everything to get it. He kidnaps those closest to Dillon who reveal to him that there is not one, but multiple Black Onyx suits. El Sacerdote travels to the Antarctic to retrieve a weapon that will allow him to butcher any who oppose him.

With the fate of the world in his hands, Dillon must choose whether the fight is worth it. But something he could never have imagined awaits him...an entity more powerful than even the Black Onyx.

A short novel.

Low Carb Free Kindle Books 8-19-13

The Machine (An Ethan Stone Thriller)
“THE MACHINE” is an adventure thriller which will thrill readers of Ludlum and Baldacci - a fast-moving tale of extraordinary characters, brutal action and a kaleidoscope of technology ideas which vividly twists its way through Hong Kong and China. All told in the unique voice of Ethan Stone – cool, laconic and intelligent.

Steven Semyonov is a 29 year-old tech billionaire. But that’s not why everyone wants to meet him. Billionaires, after all, are commonplace. Everyone want to meet Semyonov because he is the cleverest man alive.

So when Semyonov gives up his billions in California and defects to China, never to return, there must be a reason. That reason is something called The Machine.

Ethan Stone is ex-Special Forces, turned radical activist. He runs a whistle-blowing leaks web site called NotFutile.com. Has Stone stumbled upon Semyonov’s deadly secret? Stone flies to Hong Kong in pursuit, but the dark forces around Semyonov are ready for him, and he finds himself hunted for murder. He is forced to use every ounce of his cunning to survive, and his resolve to put violent Special Forces past behind him is tested to the limit. Stone enlists the help of a spiky Chinese dissident woman named Ying Ning, and travels deeper and deeper into China.to evade the sinister Public Security Bureau, track down the truth about Semyonov, and ultimately to find The Machine.

Deep beneath an ancient crater in the foothills of Tibet lies The Machine - the reason Semyonov gave up everything to come to China, the reason he gave away his billions. Only Semyonov’s not the only one who wants to find it.

Black Coke
The Top 100 Kindle bestseller

Deep in the jungles of Colombia, a brutal and fast-growing drugs cartel has genetically-modified cocaine to make it ten times more powerful and addictive than any other drug. They call it:

BLACK COKE

Nathan Kershner is an agent with the UK’s Serious Organised Crime Agency and a former special forces operative. Often working undercover, he has single-handedly brought down some of the most wanted criminals in the world.

But when he clashes with the drugs cartel and tries to stem the flow of Black Coke into Europe and the US, he finds himself up against his most difficult assignment yet.

On a mission that takes him from the crack houses of North London to the underground drug labs of southern Colombia, Nathan enters the darkest regions of the war on drugs, where treachery, greed and violence reign.

With the drugs cartel growing in power by the day, Nathan has to decide just how far he is prepared to go to avert disaster.

The Penal Colony
The future.

The British government now runs island prison colonies to take dangerous offenders from its overcrowded mainland jails.

Among all these colonies, Sert, 25 miles off the north Cornish coast, has the worst reputation. There are no warders. Satellite technology is used to keep the convicts under watch. New arrivals are dumped by helicopter and must learn to survive as best they can. To Sert, one afternoon in July, is brought Anthony John Routledge, sentenced for a sex-murder he did not commit. Routledge knows he is here for ever. And he knows he must quickly forget the rules of civilized life. But not all the islanders are savages. Under the charismatic leadership of one man a community has evolved. A community with harsh and unyielding rules, peopled by resourceful men for whom the hopeless dream of escape may not be so hopeless after all ...

Operation Varsity was the last major airborne offensive of World War II and remains the largest and most successful single-lift drop in history. Conducted by the British 6th and the American 17th Airborne Divisions, the goal of the operation was to cross the Rhine River and gain a foothold in Germany. Drawing on war diaries, unit histories, after-action reports, and interviews with veterans, The Last Drop details the horrors of parachuting through flak-filled skies, the dangers of piloting a glider safely to the ground, and the struggles of infantry combat, and shows how thorough training, extensive planning, solid execution, and sheer guts combined to make Operation Varsity a stunning victory.
