9-2-12 Rock Cut State Park 5.3 mile hike

Wilma and I went out this morning and hiked on the horse trails. I got a little nervous toward the end as it appeared like it might rain, but we stayed dry. We took the trail that loops around inside the forest in the NW corner of the park. We have not been on it in quite some time. It is a bit of a gem. Not a real wide trail. Some places just about as wide as me. We saw some horses and people at the horse camp, and a couple of people who were walking with their dogs as we got back to the parking lot. The sign at the route 173 entrance said the campground was full. Not real surprising on Labor Day weekend.

The two flags on the GPS map are spots we ran into large trees that had fallen across the trail. The trail in that section of the forest is not on the park trail map, and seems more rustic than other trails in the park. There were also some other good sized trees and limbs on this trail, but nothing that seriously impeded use of the trail like the two noted here. I emailed the park about them. It may be that they are not maintaining this trail anymore, possibly due to the state's financial situation.
