Free Kindle Books 9-30-13

PLEASE. Do everyone a favor and write an Amazon review if you end up reading a book (or trying to and giving up in disgust). It does not have to be much. Just tell what you think of the book. By the way, many times I have found the 1 and 2 star reviews on self published works to be far more revealing about the book than the more stellar reviews. Reviewers need gratification too, so if a review is helpful to you, please click on the voting button to indicate it was helpful.

Most times these books are only free for a day or two, so you have to grab them while you can. Worry about whether you really want to read it later if it seems interesting. And be careful, they can change from free to not free at any time.

I have decided to list books for no more than one day to avoid cluttering up the posts, unless there is some reason I think the book deserves extra attention.I have also decided to consolidate to a single post, instead of sometimes splitting them up by subject matter.

As is typical, there are also several religious and recipe books on the list today, along with the usual assortment of romance, porn and near porn. The Yellowstone Conundrum (Is this the end?)
The Yellowstone Caldera, the most dangerous hot-spot on the surface of the earth, erupts with a series of 11.2 earthquakes and spews volcanic ash high into the atmosphere. Six hundred miles away a 9.45 quake under Puget Sound causes massive destruction to Seattle as a tsunami strikes and destroys most of the waterfront.

The Fort Peck Dam in Montana on the Missouri River fails as does the Jackson Dam on the Snake River. The power grid in the Western United States quickly disintegrates, with utility companies fending for themselves. Power outages reach the East Coast.

The Beginning of the End is a page-turning novel with readers following eight characters as they scramble out of harm's way on Day One of the Yellowstone Conundrum; everyday people put into extraordinary situations, with the President of the United States and his cabinet scrambling in the background to find how to escape from lose-lose scenarios.

The Columbia Generating Plant on the Hanford Nuclear Reservation suffers great damage and begins a meltdown. Bridges in Portland collapse. Infrastructure in the NW is severely damaged and thousands are killed; Salt Lake City, Boise, Denver and every city, town and village in the Pacific Northwest are affected.

The massive Death Cloud from the Yellowstone explosion sends volcanic ash into the jet stream, which then begins to carry the heavy ash south across Wyoming, over Denver until it catches up with a low pressure system advancing across Texas.

Follow army vet Ray Spaulding as he survives the crash of a WSDOT ferry in the tsunami, then manages to save, then lead a handful of everyday people who rally together to save the Seattle Public Library from destruction by gangs.

University of Washington professor Denny Cain and student Karen Bagley vow to get out of Seattle, only to find themselves in a firefight as the local Seattle gangs attempt to claim the night.

Skier Penny Armstrong fights her inner demons by skiing north toward Billings in an attempt to avoid the Death Cloud.

Long-distance trucker Cameron Hedges is forced to step out of character as he first rescues Betsy Jamison, then convinces an entire town to move out of harm's way.

Robert and Nancy O'Brien, both up-and-coming managers within the Department of the Interior are separated by their jobs, then by the earthquake and explosion.

The President of the United States must deal with his own Kobayoshi Maru, with a series of impossible lose-lose scenarios as the power grid in the United States collapses.

DOMINATUS
The United States is no more…and hidden away within the isolated wilderness of Alaska’s interior resides the tiny community of Dominatus. There lives a small but diverse group of people seeking out simple lives of personal liberty and freedom, but who now face termination under the oppressive and deadly regime of the New United Nations. They will fight and if need be, die for an America that once was. An America before being swallowed up by the monster of tyrannical global governance. An America before the mandates. An America before the government drone killings. An America before the New United Nations…

Mac stood with both hands hanging from his side as each of the vehicles came to a stop nearly fifty or so feet from us. He glanced over briefly to the tree-line where Keith remained hidden.

After several more minutes, the door to one of the vehicles opened and Carol Denny emerged, making his way slowly toward Mac.

“I didn’t want things to go down like this Mac. I hope you believe me on that. But, I told you, after what you did yesterday…they were watching…have a record of everything. And now, it’s out of my hands from here.”

Carol Denny stood directly in front of Mac, his face looking him over with clear concern.

“Dammit Mac – this can go real bad for you today. Please, don’t be a hero. Don’t push back on this, it won’t end well. Not for you…not for anyone up here.”

Carol looked behind him as both vehicles opened, and two more men stepped out. One was an Asian man of average height and build, mid-30’s, with a rounded face who appeared both tired and bored to be there. The other man was much taller, well over six feet, with a lean, almost gaunt face crowned by a cleanly shaven skull. His age was more difficult to determine – though likely no more than forty-five or fifty years old.

Officer Denny leaned into Mac and whispered.

“These people are serious business Mac, don’t fuck with them.”

Mac appeared to ignore Carol’s warning, his eyes instead fixated on the other two men who were now walking toward him. There was no emotion to be found in Mac’s face, his eyes as cold as the still- frozen ground below our feet. As the taller of the two approaching men came closer, I realized both he and Mac had the very same look in their eyes - the look of men who knew well what it was to kill another human being.

Landon Reed is an ex-quarterback convicted of organizing a points-shaving scheme. During his time in prison, he found forgiveness and faith and earned his law degree. Now he longs for an opportunity to prove his loyalty and worth. Be careful what you ask for.

Harry McNaughton is one of the founding partners of McNaughton & Clay—and the only lawyer willing to take a chance employing an ex-con-turned-lawyer. Though Landon initially questions Harry’s ethics and methods, it’s clear the crusty old lawyer has one of the most brilliant legal minds Landon has ever encountered. The two dive into preparing a defense for one of the highest-profile murder trials Virginia Beach has seen in decades when Harry is gunned down in what appears to be a random mugging. Then two more lawyers are killed when the firm’s private jet crashes. Authorities suspect someone has a vendetta against McNaughton & Clay, leaving Landon and the remaining partner as the final targets.

As Landon struggles to keep the firm together, he can’t help but wonder, is the plot related to a shady case from McNaughton & Clay’s past, or to the murder trial he’s neck-deep in now? And will he survive long enough to find out?

In medical ethics, the line between right and wrong is often blurred. Who is to decide what is for the good of humanity?

Changing the world. One person at a time…

That is the mission statement of Tethys Hospital, run by Dr. Bill Gilchrist and his deformed sister, Abra. VG723, their revolutionary stem-cell-based therapy, appears to be capable of doing just that for the cancer patients who come to Tethys. VG723 is often their last hope. But if they match the protocol, they're virtually guaranteed a cure.

Dr. Sheila Takamura, a young, dedicated oncologist, is proud to be involved in the clinical trials. Once the FDA approves it for widespread use, VG723 will revolutionize cancer therapy. That is why she's alarmed when former patients return with bizarre syndromes. Yes, they're cancer free, but they're experiencing dramatic changes in their hair and skin and general appearance. When she investigates a possible link to the protocol, those patients start dying. As the body count grows, Sheila finds her own life in danger. She comes to suspect there might be a literal meaning behind the Tethys motto – but can she learn the truth in time to save herself and millions of others?

Passage Graves
Archeologist David Hyden is hell-bent to disprove his Biblical archeologist father’s religious theories. After his father is found dead at the center of Stonehenge with a strange glowing spiral engraved into his palm, David decides to challenge his father’s theory that Maeshowe—a passage grave ruin in Stenness, Scotland—possesses metaphysical powers. However, the morning after his arrival in Stenness, David wakes to find everyone else in town is dead.

NATO pathologist Brynne Thatcher is trained to recognize the subtle features of subsonic death, a unique forte and her only leg-up in a career dominated by men. Sound is the ideal weapon: an indiscriminate killer that leaves almost no trace upon its victims. She is testing an acoustic cannon in the grasslands a short distance from Stenness. Thatcher is certain her weapon caused the Stenness massacre, but all bets are off when she pinpoints Maeshowe as the source of deadly noise. The ruin erupts with low-frequency sound every 77 hours. Each explosion is larger and deadlier than the last. The only clues to stopping Maeshowe are the spiral petroglyph glowing inside its central chamber and the lone survivor, David.

Investigating the connection between the two glowing spiral symbols, Thatcher and David uncover Brenton’s most bizarre theory: There are four locks and four keys lost throughout antiquity. Any man who finds a matching lock and key will gain one of the powers of the Four Horsemen of Apocalypse (Conqueror, War, Plague, and Death). Displacement of a key awakened the passage grave. Unless the “key” is placed into the petroglyph “lock,” the ruin will kill every living thing.

Finding the key won’t be easy. A clandestine brotherhood known as the Abaddon is sworn to protect the keys. As Maeshowe’s eruption spreads across northern Europe, the leadership of the Abaddon crumbles. A new leader of the dark society seeks to become Conqueror, and a race to the Apocalypse begins.

Traitor
A stunning terror bombing strikes a research facility in France, a much-admired African-American general is killed in a hit-and-run accident, and Pentagon staff officer John Reynolds finds an old friend--now an influential lobbyist--drunk and fearful. In short order, Reynolds must face a car bombing at his front door, his girlfriend's murder, and the wrath of a retired Green Beret general as scarred as he is inexplicably wealthy. Struggling to behave honorably--and to resist a beauty as corrupt as any human being on earth--Reynolds finds himself at the center of an international plot to sell the Pentagon the most expensive fighter aircraft in history . . . even though the weapon may not work. In an homage to the great noir fiction of Hammett, Chandler, and Cain, Ralph Peters has written the most rapid-fire, hard-hitting novel of his career--a story of Washington corruption that could have been lifted from today's headlines.

The Profiler's Daughter (Sky Stone Thriller Series)
A grisly murder. A six-year-old eyewitness. A gun from the grave.

The Profiler's Daughter is a psychologically haunting thriller that combines murder mystery, love triangle, and family intrigue in one satisfying page burner.

Sky Stone was born into the wealth and privilege of Boston's oldest Brahmin family but chooses instead to follow in the footsteps of her deceased father, legendary FBI profiler Monk Stone. In the chilly morning hours before the Boston Marathon, when a beautiful university student is found strangled and mutilated, her body left at the base of Heartbreak Hill, Sky returns from self-imposed exile to investigate. Thirty-six hours into the investigation, Sky's world turns upside down when she is fired from the Homicide team. They pin the murder on an innocent man, forcing Sky into a life-threatening game of cat and mouse with the real killer. From the stately mansions of Beacon Hill to the flat scrubland of central Texas, Sky keeps the reader on a razor's edge, culminating in a no-holds-barred shoot-out.

The Profiler's Daughter, the first in the Sky Stone Thriller series, introduces a moody, enigmatic, and brilliant female sleuth with the fierce bite of Stieg Larsson's Lisbeth Salander. As adeptly written as Martin Cruz Smith's complex Arkady Renko novels, this thriller offers an intriguing plot, richly detailed characters, and an astonishing conclusion guaranteed to leave the reader begging for more.

Hamfist Over Hanoi: Wolfpack on the Prowl (Hamfist Trilogy Part 3)
Air Force pilot Hamilton “Hamfist” Hancock thinks he has left the Vietnam War behind him, after completing a hazardous tour of duty as a Forward Air Controller (FAC) flying over the Ho Chi Minh Trail. He is based at Yokota Air Base, in Japan, and becomes comfortable flying generals and other VIPs around Asia in his Sabreliner executive jet. He is adjusting to his new marriage, and aside from the stress of TDY assignments, life is placid.

But the war returns with a vengeance when Hamfist suffers a personal loss at the hands of the North Vietnamese. Hamfist knows that the only way he can find inner peace is to go back for another combat tour, to try to bring the horrific war to a speedy end. And this time, he will fly a fighter, the top-of-the-line F-4 Phantom II.

Hamfist checks out in the F-4 and arrives at his base in Thailand just in time for the start of Operation Linebacker, the bombing offensive over Hanoi. He soon finds himself flying over the most heavily defended area in the world, dodging Surface-to-Air Missiles (SAMs) and dueling with enemy aircraft, the vaunted MiG-series fighters. And along the way he has picked up two new goals: completing 100 missions over North Vietnam and defeating a MiG in aerial combat.

Only time will tell if Hamfist will achieve his 100 missions, score a victory over a MiG and, most important, help end the war.

Armored Thunderbolt: The U.S. Army Sherman in World War II
* Hundreds of photos, including many never published before
* Riveting accounts of armored warfare in World War II

* Compares the Sherman to other tanks, including the Panther and Tiger

* Author is a world-renowned expert on the Sherman tank and American armor

Some tank crews referred to the American M4 Sherman tank as a "death trap." Others, like Gen. George Patton, believed that the Sherman helped win World War II. So which was it: death trap or war winner? Armor expert Steven Zaloga answers that question by recounting the Sherman's combat history. Focusing on Northwest Europe (but also including a chapter on the Pacific), Zaloga follows the Sherman into action on D-Day, among the Normandy hedgerows, during Patton's race across France, in the great tank battle at Arracourt in September 1944, at the Battle of the Bulge, across the Rhine, and in the Ruhr pocket in 1945.

The Cleaner - John Milton #2
Meet John Milton

He considers himself an artisan. A craftsman. His trade is murder.

Milton is the man the government sends after you when everything else has failed. Ruthless. Brilliant. Anonymous. Lethal. You wouldn't pick him out of a crowd but you wouldn't want to be on his list. But now, after ten years, he's had enough - there's blood on his hands and he wants out. Trouble is, this job is not one you can just walk away from.

He goes on the run, seeking atonement for his sins by helping the people he meets along the way. But his past cannot be easily forgotten and before long it is Milton who is hunted, and not the hunter.

The Cleaner

A career of state-sanctioned murder has taken its toll. Milton is troubled by nightmares, a long line of ghosts who torment his dreams. He resolves to make his next job his last and, then, perhaps, he can start to make amends for everything that he has done.

Sharon Warriner is a single mother in the East End of London, suicidal with fear that she's lost her young son to a life in the gangs. After Milton saves her life, he promises to help. But the gang, and the charismatic rapper who leads it, is not about to cooperate with him.

As London burns through summer riots, Milton finds himself in unfamiliar territory, dealing with an unfamiliar foe. And when his employer sends another agent after him, the odds against him are stacked even higher.

In the late 1950's, the CIA, at the height of communist paranoia, established PROJECT MK ULTRA to develop drugs that could be utilized to effectively brainwash foreign enemies. In 1963, the project came to an abrupt halt when several of the CIA's own agents were unwittingly given high doses of LSD at a weekend retreat, and later suffered severe flashbacks, depression, and in one case, suicide as a result.

Thirty-five years have transpired since the fateful MK ULTRA project was shut down. A group of zealots, including several of the original participants, now in highly placed government and academic positions, has kept the program, known as the SIGMA PROJECT, alive. Shifting their focus to the development of highly potent synthetic endorphins and utilizing PET (positron emission tomography) scan technology, they are on the threshold of a major breakthrough in the ability to understand and control the brain's thought processes. And they will let no one get in their way.

Dr. Geoffrey Davis, a former medic in the Navy Seals, is the chief resident on the neurosurgery service at the New York Trauma Center. From his first day back on the job after spending a year in the PETronics Research Laboratory of Dr. Josef Balassi, strange events begin unfolding. A crazed janitor, a former head injury patient at the NYTC, explosives in hand, takes a little girl hostage at the Central Park Zoo. A respected Hasidic rabbi opens fire with a machine gun on a crowded subway train. Several of Geoff's patients die under mysterious circumstances while on his neurosurgery service, and key aspects of their medical records, including their PET scans, vanish, leading Geoff inexorably toward the frightening conclusion that all of these events are in some way connected to activities at the NYTC's PETronics Institute.

As the deadly conspiracy swirls around him, Geoff becomes increasingly isolated, on the run from the CIA, the police and his own medical staff. At stake is the ability to control the human brain, and Dr. Geoffrey Davis is the only one with the knowledge, courage, and ability to stop THE SIGMA PROJECT!

THE ENDORPHIN CONSPIRACY is a first rate medical thriller, a chilling story rooted in today’s medical technology. A breathless ride from start to finish, it’s a novel you won’t want put down until you turn the final page!

In 43 AD, Levi ben Cheleph, a Roman customs official, composes a controversial genealogy of Jesus. For the next nineteen centuries, this list becomes one of the most disputed texts of the New Testament and the basis for one of the most important biblical secrets of all time. The 13th Enumeration is the key to that forgotten secret.

Darius Zaridast, CEO of Aquarius Elemental Solutions, is on a quest to destroy those he believes are responsible for the death of his father and the status of his homeland, Persia, as a third-world dictatorship ruled by religious fanatics. Darius finds evidence that this group, which he calls the Order, is also part of a centuries-old conspiracy to keep the secret of the 13th Enumeration. This secret, he learns, is their greatest fear because it is the key to information that could destroy them.

His research into this secretive group of people is compiled in a dossier he calls FILE-13. Darius believes some of history's most influential men are somehow connected to the secret:

*Sir Isaac Newton, one of the most influential scientists of all time, spent a good portion of his life looking for a hidden biblical code.
*Charles Thomson, one of only two signers of the original Declaration of Independence, was responsible for the most notorious symbol in American history. This symbol, known by only a few, is a key to the secret.
*William Frishmuth, a German chemist and secret agent for Abraham Lincoln, was so valued for his services he was paid two hundred dollars from Abraham Lincoln's private purse.
*William Colgate of Colgate/Palmolive, one of America's early entrepreneurs, owned a building which featured an unsolved brick symbol--a symbol which today is known as the "American Da Vinci Code." This cipher holds the key to the forgotten secret.
*Sir Robert Anderson, commissioner of Scotland Yard during the Ripper murders, almost discovered the secret.
*Benjamin Franklin, writer, inventor, philosopher, and statesman, may have been involved in guarding this ancient knowledge.

As Darius's plot for revenge matures, he initiates the most devastating attack in the history of New York's financial district. With Manhattan Island a ghost town, Darius uses the ensuing events to perpetrate the greatest financial manipulation of all time. Just when he has the world convinced he is its savior, Darius Zarindast destroys his entire corporate empire, causing the largest financial meltdown in history. He has finally realized his revenge. The only bitterness in his cup of retribution is his inability to solve the secret of the 13th Enumeration.

In this battlefield of revenge, conspiracy, and superstition, an archeological discovery is made in Capernaum, Israel--a discovery which will forever change the way the prophecies of the Bible are understood. Zane Harrison, a dig volunteer, and Rachael Neumann, daughter of the director of Israeli Antiquities, unwittingly stumble upon an incredible treasure of artifacts. Their find leads to the rediscovery of the 13th Enumeration. They soon learn their discovery is the key to a mathematical cipher found in the very first chapter of the New Testament, an ancient code which has profound implications regarding the status of Jesus Christ as the biblical Messiah. The unearthing of this ancient secret places them directly in the crosshairs of the Order. Will they be able to share their discovery with the world before the Order destroys the evidence and once again erases all knowledge of the 13th Enumeration from the pages of history?

The 13th Enumeration is a thrilling page-turner which weaves little-known historical and biblical facts into a plot that could have been taken from today's headlines. The explosive conclusions of this story will leave the secular and Christian reader alike wondering if this is really a work of fiction--or the greatest discovery of our generation.

Carley Downs, medical doctor with the Peace Corps and first daughter to the United States, has been mistakenly abducted by the Guatemalan drug cartel. Without knowing Carley’s true identity, the cartel believes someone in her medical team is in possession of sensitive information involving cartel activities.

President Harlan Downs must decide on an expedient, low profile rescue operation before his daughter’s captors discover Carley’s true identity and force the United States into impossible negotiations for her release.

Matthew and Chase McWain, highly decorated former U.S. Marine Corps aviators, are struggling to make a success of their flying service in the short time they have been out of the Corps. The president has been made aware of Matthew’s special skills flying for Force Recon and has requested him to lead the rescue op. Matt and his team discover that the cartel has established an alliance with an Iranian terrorist organization. Time is quickly running out for Matt to snatch Carley from the cartel’s grasp before they deliver her into the hands of terrorists who will surely recognize the first daughter.

Outmanned and outgunned, the rescue team find themselves locked into life or death struggles, first with the cartel, and later with the notoriously savage Iranian terrorist leader, Ahmad Hassam, as all three fight for the possession of Carley Downs.

Free Kindle Books 9-18-13

From the top 100 free list
As is typical, there are also several religious and recipe books on the list today, along with the usual assortment of romance, porn and near porn. I don't call them out because they don't interest me. Click on the link above and search through the Free List Tab if you are interested in such books.

The Winds of Kedem
Revenge and retribution in the Middle East. Only one man can save Israel from a nuclear holocaust...
Mossad agent David Katri is torn between duty to country and to conscience as he battles to prevent an Arab terrorist plot to destroy the House of Israel. His implacable foe, Rashid Sedawi, is determined to bring about the end of the Jewish state. The action switches between Mossad headquarters in Tel Aviv and the Syrian Desert, between the teeming Shi'ite suburbs of Beirut and Pakistan's secret nuclear base near Islamabad. The streets of Stockholm and snow-bound Vienna also become soaked in blood as Katri finds himself tangled in a web of deceit spun by Arabs, Christians and Jews. A web where even love has a price.
The Winds of Kedem is a heart-stopping tale of vengeance, courage, love and betrayal ...

Free From Stackpole.
Stackpole puts a book or two up for free periodically.  I have read several of their free books. Some interesting stuff. Most of what I have seen is WWII German military history, with varying quality of translation, some other military history from lesser known units, along with some fishing and other outdoors oriented books.

Searching for George Gordon Meade: The Forgotten Victor of Gettysburg
Despite his great victory at Gettysburg and his command of the army that forced Lee's surrender at Appomattox, George Meade saw his fame eclipsed by that of Lee, Grant, and other Civil War generals. This book does a great deal to redress that historical injustice. Tom Huntington has invented a new genre of biography that shifts between past and present as he tells the story of Meade's life and describes his own pilgrimage to the key sites of that life. The result is an engrossing narrative that the reader can scarcely put down. --James M. McPherson, Pulitzer Prize-winning author of Battle Cry of Freedom
"Searching for George Gordon Meade is a splendid book! Well-researched, well-reasoned, and well-written, it's a timely and vital addition to the all-too-meager literature on this neglected American hero. Strongly recommended for serious historians as well as for a general readership. Excellent!" --Ralph Peters, author of Cain at Gettysburg

"Much more than another Civil War biography, Tom Huntington's gripping personal ‘search' for George Gordon Meade is unique and irresistible: a combination life story, military history, travelogue, and cultural commentary that brings us closer than ever to the old general and his strange reputation--and also opens new windows to our own unending search for an understandable national identity." --Harold Holzer, author and Chairman of Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial Foundation

A historian's investigation of the life and times of Gen. George Gordon Meade to discover why the hero of Gettysburg has failed to achieve the status accorded to other generals of the conflict
Covers Meade's career from his part in the Mexican-American War through his participation in the great Civil War engagements, including Second Bull Run, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, and Petersburg
Available for the 150th anniversary of the Battle of Gettysburg
Explores Meade's legacy today at reenactments, battlefields, museums, and institutions that preserve history

Evil Deeds (Bob Danforth Series)
“Evil Deeds” is the first book in the Bob Danforth series, which includes “Terror Cell” and “The Nostradamus Secret.” In this three book series, the reader can follow the lives of Bob & Liz Danforth, and of their son, Michael, from 1971 through 2011.

“Evil Deeds” begins on a sunny spring day in 1971 in a quiet Athenian suburb. Bob & Liz Danforth’s morning begins just like every other morning: Breakfast together, Bob roughhousing with Michael. Then Bob leaves for his U.S. Army unit and the nightmare begins, two-year-old Michael is kidnapped.

So begins a decades-long journey that takes the Danforth family from Michael's kidnapping and Bob and Liz's efforts to rescue him, to Bob's forced separation from the Army because of his unauthorized entry into Bulgaria, to his recruitment by the CIA, to Michael's commissioning in the Army, to Michael's capture by a Serb SPETSNAZ team in Macedonia, and to Michael's eventual marriage to the daughter of the man who kidnapped him as a child. It is the stops along the journey that weave an intricate series of heart-stopping events built around complex, often diabolical characters. The reader experiences CIA espionage during the Balkans War, attempted assassinations in the United States, and the grisly exploits of a psychopathic killer.

Saffina Desforges' ROSE RED crime thriller boxed set (4-in-1)
Part of a September giveaway (0ver 10,000 FREE books given away this month already!)

From the award-winning international best-selling author, SAFFINA DESFORGES (Sugar & Spice has now sold over a quarter of a million copies and a further 75,000 FREE downloads have been given away) comes a crime thriller spree of stories.

FREE for the next five days!

Including Rose Red #1 & #2 full-length novels and two series-related short stories, this boxed set has everything you need to start you off on your next long-running crime series.

Great British crime stories taking the theme of classic European fairy tales and nursery rhymes.

#1 - SNOW WHITE

Cass 'Red' Rose is a feisty female cop fighting the usual battles that go with being a senior detective in The London's Met. Most coppers go home at night and forget about it. Not so easy when you live with a leading criminal defence lawyer; as one fights to put them away, the other tries to get them off.

A priceless artefact is stolen en route from the Louvre to the Victoria & Albert Museum and now the mysterious Queenie wants The Hunstman to get it back. For Red the case is a distraction from the more pressing matters of a gang terrorising the London estates.

But when Red's boss and mentor is targeted by The Hunstman things get personal. Very personal.

Set in modern-day London, Snow White is a fast-paced, gritty urban thriller that will leave you wondering whether fairy tales really do have happy endings.

#2 - RAPUNZEL

With the Huntsman safely behind bars, and newly promoted to DCI, Red is faced with a new challenge. Someone is murdering men in the city and leaving a particularly nasty calling card in their mouths.

Of course, things are never that simple for Red. Throw in a suicide jumper on a bank holiday weekend, the kids being abducted, the partner's ex wanting custody, DC Jez Harris's new girlfriend, and the small matter of inheriting an illegal Smith & Wesson, and it's just another day in the life of a Met police officer. Oh, and did we mention Rapunzel's?

RING-A-RING O'ROSES

When a rare family day out for Detective Chief Inspector Cass 'Red' Rose and her barrister partner is cut short by a murder on Blackheath, Red's team are faced with the possibility of gang warfare and race riots among London's troubled youths unless they can sort things. Fast.

With the Super wanting results yesterday, the pressure is on to find the killer. But DCs Barry Taylor and Jez Harris have other things on their mind. As usual. And when the pathologist examining the victim starts pointing out anomalies it's clear a simple murder case is about to open up new mysteries.

As if Red didn't have enough problems, the Huntsman is back in town and meeting with the mysterious Queenie. And the kids want to go trick-or-treating. Even the busiest of detectives have to make time for Halloween!

THE NIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS

Christmas comes but once a year, and no-one is more thankful than DCI Cass "Red" Rose.

With no major cases on her desk on Christmas Eve morning it seems Red can finish her shift and go Christmas shopping like any normal person.

But life is never straight-forward where Red is concerned. And when a police officer from her own station, dressed as Santa, has to be arrested in the toy store where Red is due to meet Grandma and Ruby, it seems to Red like she's never off duty. And that's before the drunken yobs on the next floor start smashing the place up.

Then there's the small matter of staying up to welcome Santa's little helpers. Fortunately she has some little elves of her own to lend a hand.
