Wilma and I parked by the conservatory and walked up to IL Street Park and back. We noted a fair number of bikes, walkers, and joggers, some geese, and a few ducks.

Hollow Strength

WILL THERE BE WAR BETWEEN THE US AND IRAN?

June, 2014. The world is shocked as Iran's newest and most powerful destroyer, the Shaheed, explodes and sinks on its maiden voyage, killing a full cadre of VIPs, including a dozen of the most powerful clerics in Iran. The ship's executive officer, Commander Mohsen Saeed of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps Navy, ashore during the explosion, frantically works to uncover the truth behind the sinking of his ship. Unfortunately for Saeed, learning that truth puts him and his family in grave danger; he is targeted by death squads who want him to carry the secrets he has unearthed to his grave. Meanwhile, accusations of blame for the sinking of the Shaheed bring the US and Iran to the brink of war. As the net of pursuit draws ever closer, CIA officers Joe Cerrato and Cynthia Banks struggle to get Saeed and his family out of Iran before they are caught and executed in cold blood. Full of authentic detail from an author who has served as a field officer in the Directorate of Operations of the CIA, Hollow Strength serves up a compelling picture of the Iran of tomorrow, and the perils of real world espionage operations.

Douglas Frantz, author of the bestselling "Nuclear Jihadist," and two-time Pulitzer Prize nominee describes Hollow Strength with just two words:

"Eerily accurate."

Jeff Stein, author of “ A Murder in a Time of War," veteran Washington Post journalist and “Spy Talk” blogger, says:

“Art Keller has definitely been there, done that. As a former CIA operative in the agency division responsible for tracking black market nuclear weapons, he has seen enough to make his hair stand up straight permanently, and in "Hollow Strength" he'll make yours stand up, too.”

JM Le Duc of Suspense Magazine writes:

"In 'Hollow Strength,' Art Keller accomplishes two things: he tells a great story from the mind of one who has been in the ‘business,’ and he has an uncanny knack of letting his reader know what Iranian culture is truly like. The story begins with the sinking of an Iranian naval vessel by its own government and the captain who figures out the plan. “Hollow Strength” centers on the proud Iranian Naval officer who realizes he is being used as a pawn by the Iranian government and his attempt to bring his family to the United States and the two American agents who devise an intricate plan to try and help him.
There is a lot of background information in the beginning, but once the action begins it is non-stop. It is a heart-throbbing thriller that will keep you glued to the page. If you enjoy espionage and are into the U.S./Iranian political tug of war, Art Keller’s “Hollow Strength” is a no brainer. You will love it."

Free Games on Kindle

Jeff Bezos, the CEO of Amazon, in an interview he gave in 2010, famously remarked, “The number one app for the iPad when I checked a couple of days ago was called Angry Birds—a game where you throw birds at pigs and they blow up. The number one thing on the Kindle is Stieg Larsson. It’s a different audience. We’re designing for people who want to read.”

Those days are long gone, however. With the introduction of the Kindle Fire, Amazon has embraced the tablet market audience. Unlike its predecessors, the Kindle Fire is not just a reading device. It is a complete Android tablet, running on impressive hardware. You can listen to music, watch movie and play games on your Kindle.

3-30-13 Pecatonica Prairie Path

We started at Sumner Park in Pecatonica. Walked the path along the Pecatonica River next to the Winnebago County Fairgrounds, and then west toward the county line.

The bridge is still unfinished and not safe to cross just east of the county line so we turned back there.

On our way back we took a short excursion into the SE corner of Pecatonica Wetlands Forest Preserve. Too muddy, wet, and icy for my taste so we turned back.

A short walk - 3.7 miles according to Base Camp. Lots of wind noise.

Wilma and I have been to these places several times before. I was hoping the bridge would be finished so we could walk into the next county and see how the path is there. I could have sworn the blurb on the FP district web site said it would be finished in December of 2012. But, it obviously is not done yet.

Outdoor Camping Hiking Polypaudio Survival Rescue Emergency Signal Whistle

Now and then I am inclined to purchase low cost outdoors items, usually on eBay. I sometimes get about what I expect, cheap junk that will not work well and fail easily. I have been surprised by how good some of the items turned out to be, especially at the price point. For 99 cents shipped, this is a decent deal IMO.
Photobucket
I stole this picture from the auction. Hope he does not mind. It describes the whistle pretty well. It was further described as:
Outdoor Camping Hiking Polypaudio Survival Rescue Emergency Signal Whistle Package includes:1*Whistle
It came from China. Was 99 cents including shipping. A little heavier duty than I would have expected. Seems reasonably loud, even not blowing real hard. eBay seller style-park.

Its about 17/16" wide, 2.75" long, and 1/4" thick at its thickest. About 1/8" thick where it goes in your mouth.

Comes with a chain to attach it. I would not use it on a key chain as it is all plastic and probably would not stand up well as a key fob.

WHITE JADE spins a web of deceit and murder across the globe, against the backdrop of a deadly international power game.

Former Recon Marine Nick Carter is a man with a dark history of emotional and physical scars. He works for the PROJECT, a covert counter-terrorism unit reporting to the President. Selena Connor is a beautiful, strong and skilled linguist. When her wealthy uncle is murdered by someone looking for an ancient book about the elixir of immortality, she's thrown into Nick's dangerous world.

Nick is assigned to protect Selena and help her recover the missing text. It's the beginning of a life and death adventure reaching from San Francisco to Beijing, from Washington to the hidden chambers of Tibet. Someone is determined to take over China and attack America--and Nick and Selena are right in the line of fire.

International intrigue, terrorist acts and the threat of nuclear war form the core of this fast-paced thriller, the first volume in a series featuring Nick, Selena and the PROJECT.

Reviews
"I was skeptical about this novel. Would I really be able to get drawn in to a story about a band of renegades trying to save the world's food supply? Well, the short answer is yes. I was completely engrossed from the very beginning. Season of the Harvest is smart and funny and wild and frightening and really, really scarily believable." - Reviewer Elizabeth Schulenburg
"This novel is a delicious treat for those who like action and adventure. It is a science fiction novel that is at once contemporary and reminiscent of the great novels that have bejeweled the genre through the years. It is a cautionary tale that will haunt the reader, and invite us all to think twice about the simple decisions we make every day." - Author Dan Moore
"Season of the Harvest was smart, entertaining, and believable. If you enjoy your Sci-fi novels and/or thrillers check this book out and then hang on to the edge of your seat, because that is where you will be perched until you hit the last page!" - Moonlit Dreams
If you enjoy stories by James Rollins, Michael Crichton, Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child, get ready to strap yourself in for a roller coaster ride of terrifying adventure...
You Are What You Eat
At a genetics lab where a revolutionary strain of corn is being developed, FBI Special Agent Jack Dawson's best friend and fellow agent is brutally murdered, his body torn apart.
Jack is convinced that Naomi Perrault, a beautiful geneticist and suspected terrorist, is behind the murder. But when Jack is framed for setting off a bomb that devastates the FBI lab in Quantico, Naomi becomes Jack's only hope of survival.
Confronted by the terrifying truth of what the genetically engineered seeds stolen by his friend are truly for and who is really behind them, Jack joins Naomi in a desperate fight across half the globe to save humanity from extermination...

"Hicks tells this story as part X-Files, part CSI and part Jason Bourne. And it works." - The Kudzu Corner
"If you've got a taste for conspiracy theories, then this book is a perfect read. A science fiction fan couldn't ask for anything better. Aliens, action, suspense, even a touch of romance -- Hicks does it all." - The Guilded Quill

REVIEWS:

"I read Dark Horse by J.R. Rain. He's the author of Moon Dance, that I reviewed last column. The author is a private investigator, and it shows; this is another fast moving and entertaining detective story. Rain is surely destined for larger success, if he can get the right break; his fiction is fun reading."
—PIERS ANTHONY, bestselling author of Xanth

"I finished Dark Horse late last night. I enjoyed it immensely—very good story, J.R.! I really liked your dialogue, which kept me chuckling each time I sat down to read the book. Add great character and scene descriptions and a well-paced plot, and you've got a gripping story indeed. I can honestly say your book was as entertaining as anything I've ever read from Patricia Cornwell. I can easily see Dark Horse moving to the big screen!"
—AIDEN JAMES, bestselling author of Plague of Coins

"Dark Horse is one of the best books I've read in a long time! A great classic detective story with a modern twist. Unique and interesting characters (I think I'm half in love with Jim Knighthorse now!), a great plot that kept me guessing until the end, and some of the funniest lines I've read anywhere. Rain does an amazing job of blending suspense, mystery and humor in this fantastic debut novel destined for the keeper shelf."

ROME. The mere mention of the name instills images of grandeur. The mighty empire was a guiding light for the civilized world for a thousand years. Was that by chance or careful design?

To gain enlightenment he will have to face specters from his own past to safeguard himself, his family, and possibly the entire planet. The stakes have never been higher for him or his clandestine agency.

I just finished 65 Below. It was a wonderful albeit wild ride. I look forward to listening to your other novels, God willing. I am a disabled vet and I found this novel both encouraging and inspiring. I can't get out so much in the great outdoors like I used to but I loved the imagery of it that you shared.

---
Wow. Where do I start. Just finished 65 Below. Once I started... I couldn't stop. I finished it in two days. I can't wait to start the next one...

---
I ... was riveted to each one (of your stories). I noticed that they all intertwined with one another, and I am very happy that I listened to them in order. Are there any more in the works, and will they be connected somehow to the others?

---
I am not sure how I found this author, I suspect it was a promo on the end of a podcast I was listening to. 65 Below is a action thriller based in Alaska, its set in a post 9-11 world and every second American character appears to be ex Marine or special forces. I hope no international terrorists read this as there is enough in here to give people ideas regarding how to kill off large population areas without damaging property or infrastructure. In fact its so simple and obvious I am not sure why it has never been done. Basil has given the Americans a new enemy. An action thriller well worth the read.

To Iraq And Back

My name is Jessica Scott. I am a soldier. I am a wife. I am a mother. There are many stories from the Iraq War, but this one is mine.

In 2009, Army second lieutenant Jessica Scott deployed to Iraq as part of Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation New Dawn. It was a year of many firsts.

This is the first person journey through a combat tour in Iraq, through being a woman in the army and learning to be an officer in the unforgiving environment of a brigade combat team. This is the journey of a writer, learning to find her voice. This is the journey of a mother, confronting the emotions of leaving her children. This is the story of an inexperienced lieutenant, growing into a leader.

This is the journey as it happened, without commentary.

This is her blog. There are many blogs from the Iraq war, but this one is hers.

Controlled access for food crop seed on a global basis has progressed at an alarming rate. This is controlled by Monsanto and the likes but is mandated by the White House as a matter of national security. As a result of this action, more then 200,000 farmers, in just India, have committed suicide. This is the ultimate offense against humanity, short of out right genocide, and unconscionable.
Prepper's Garden Food Production will give you access to the information you need to grow all your food and your own seed, to avert control of your food access by this tyranny!

The reviews are a little suspicious, especially given the number of them so soon after publication for such a limited interest self published book that gives at least some appearance of toeing a bit of a fringe line. The Penal Colony

The future.

The British government now runs island prison colonies to take dangerous offenders from its overcrowded mainland jails.

Among all these colonies, Sert, 25 miles off the north Cornish coast, has the worst reputation. There are no warders. Satellite technology is used to keep the convicts under watch. New arrivals are dumped by helicopter and must learn to survive as best they can. To Sert, one afternoon in July, is brought Anthony John Routledge, sentenced for a sex-murder he did not commit. Routledge knows he is here for ever. And he knows he must quickly forget the rules of civilized life. But not all the islanders are savages. Under the charismatic leadership of one man a community has evolved. A community with harsh and unyielding rules, peopled by resourceful men for whom the hopeless dream of escape may not be so hopeless after all ...

‘Normally I shun such reviewer clichés as “a real page-turner”, “leaves you breathless”, “can’t put it down”, considering them to be empty substitutes for critical thought. Well, there’s always an exception: I’ve weighed those phrases carefully, and I believe that each of them accurately applies to a new novel, The Penal Colony by Richard Herley.’

— Roger Miller, Milwaukee Journal

‘intriguing, ultimately uplifting ... this fast-moving, intelligent thriller goes into top gear.’

— Publishers’ Weekly

Rock River Recreation Path 3-24-13

Wilma and I went out in the late afternoon for a walk along the river. It was nice when we left but by the time we got there the wind had picked up and there was 30-40 MPH winds. We walked for a while but I did not like the wind so we cut the walk short and came home.

We parked by Nicholas Conservatory. I was planning to walk down to the Whitman Street Bridge, up to Illinois Street Park and then back, but we skipped the part up to Illinois Street Park. Just too windy.

Wilma and I have been here before.

The Shannon Novels

"Dark, brutal, captivating -- this is one hell of a book, the kind of book that doesn't let go of you once you start it. Dave Zeltserman is clearly the real deal." Steve Hamilton, Edgar Award-winning author of THE LOCK ARTIST

From Shamus Award-winning author Dave Zeltserman comes these two gripping and intense thrillers unlike any you've ever seen. In BAD THOUGHTS horrifying murders are being committed in Massachusetts and everything seems to be pointing to one of two possibilities: Bill Shannon has gone insane or a killer has come back from the grave to torment him. In the sequel, BAD KARMA, Shannon has moved to Boulder, Colorado, and when he's hired to investigate the murder of two college students, he finds himself mixed up with deadly Russian gangsters, evil yoga studios, deviant cults, and worse!

2013_03_23 Rock River Recreation Path - Martin Park - Shorewood Park

Wilma and I went for a short walk today along the river. Wilma is recovering from a sore muscle and I from gout so we both took it easy. Wilma seemed fine, and I was Ok too, if a little slow. Lots of people out walking, running, and biking. The park district has removed the boardwalk out into the lagoon in Shorewood Park. It was pretty iffy last time we came by here.

Rise of the Fallen (All the King's Men)

In the streets of Chicago exists an uneasy, centuries-old truce between vampires and their distant cousins, a race of shifters called drecks. Micah wants Apostle to kill him, a request Apostle is more than happy to fulfill.

When ex-Army medic Samantha Garrett inadvertently disrupts the plot and saves Micah’s life, a chain reaction sets Micah’s heart on a collision course with Sam’s, but he will have to protect her from Apostle and her obsessive ex-husband, Steve, if they will have a chance at forever. The Honor of the Queen (Honor Harrington)

RIGHT WOMAN, WRONG PLACE

It's hard to give peace a chance when the other side regards war as the necessary prelude to conquest, and a sneak attack as the best means to that end. That's why the Kingdom of Manticore needs allies against the so-called ""Republic"" of Haven--and the planet Grayson is just the right strategic place to make a very good ally indeed. But Her Majesty's Foreign Office had overlooked a ""minor cultural difference"" when they chose Honor Harrington to carry the flag: women on the planet Grayson are without rank or rights; Honor's very presence is an intolerable affront to every male on the planet.

At first Honor doesn't take it personally; where she comes from gender discrimination is barely a historical memory, right up there in significance to fear of the left-handed. But in time such treatment as she receives from the Graysonites does become wearing, and Honor would withdraw if she could--but then Grayson's fratricidal sister planet attacks without warning and she must stay and prevail, not just for Honor's honor, but for her sovereign's, for--THE HONOR OF THE QUEEN.

On Basilisk Station (Honor Harrington)

INTRODUCING
HONOR HARRINGTON

Having made him look a fool, she's been exiled to Basilisk Station in disgrace and set up for ruin by a superior who hates her.

Her demoralized crew blames her for their ship's humiliating posting to an out-of-the-way picket station.

The aborigines of the system's only habitable planet are smoking homicide-inducing hallucinogens.

Parliament isn't sure it wants to keep the place; the major local industry is smuggling; the merchant cartels want her head; the star-conquering, so-called "Republic" of Haven is Up To Something; and Honor Harrington has a single, over-age light cruiser with an armament that doesn't work to police the entire star system.

But the people out to get her have made one mistake. They've made her mad.

Caliphate

"Slavery is a part of Islam . . . Slavery is part of jihad, and jihad will remain as long there is Islam." —Sheikh Saleh Al-Fawzan, author of the religious textbook At-Tawhid ("Monotheism") and senior Saudi cleric.

Demography is destiny. In the 22nd century European deathbed demographics have turned the continent over to the more fertile Moslems. Atheism in Europe has been exterminated. Homosexuals are hanged, stoned or crucified. Such Christians as remain are relegated to dhimmitude, a form of second class citizenship. They are denied arms, denied civil rights, denied a voice, and specially taxed via the Koranic yizya. Their sons are taken as conscripted soldiers while their daughters are subject to the depredations of the continent's new masters.

In that world, Petra, a German girl sold into prostitution as a slave at the age of nine to pay her family's yizya, dreams of escape. Unlike most girls of the day, Petra can read. And in her only real possession, her grandmother's diary, a diary detailing the fall of European civilization, Petra has learned of a magic place across the sea: America.

But it will take more than magic to free Petra and Europe from their bonds; it will take guns, superior technology, and a reborn spirit of freedom.

He's a hradani, a race known for their uncontrollable rages, bloodthirsty tendencies, and inability to maintain civilized conduct. None of the other Five Races of man like the hradani. Besides his ethnic burden, Bahzell has problems of his own to deal with: a violated hostage bond, a vengeful prince, a price on his head. He doesn't want to mess with anybody else's problems, let alone a god's. Let alone the War God's! So how does he end up a thousand leagues from home, neck-deep in political intrigue, assassins, demons, psionicists, evil sorcery, white sorcery, dark gods, good gods, bad poets, greedy landlords, and most of Bortalik Bay Well, it's all the War God's fault. . . .

A Desert Called Peace (Carrera)

HE RAISED AN ARMY
AGAINST THOSE WHO
TOOK EVERYTHING FROM HIM

They should have picked their enemies more carefully.

Five centuries from now, on a remarkably Earthlike planet that is mankind's sole colony in space, religious fanatics called the ""Salafi Ikhwan"" have murdered the uncle of former colonel Patrick Hennessey. That was their first mistake, because uncle was rich and Hennessey was rather a good colonel. But they also murdered Hennessey's wife, Linda, and their three small children, and that was their worst mistake for she was the only restraint Hennessey had ever accepted.

From the pile of rubble and the pillar of fire that mark the last resting place of Linda Hennessey and her children arises a new warrior—Carrera, scourge of the Salafis. He will forge an army of ruthless fanatics from the decrepit remains of failed state's military. He will wage war across half a world. He will find those who killed his family. He will destroy them, and those who support them, utterly, completely, without restraint or remorse.

Only when he is finished will there be peace: the peace of an empty wind as it blows across a desert strewn with the bones of Carrera's enemies.

The Spinoza Trilogy

All three bestselling Spinoza vampire mystery novellas together in one volume, including:

THE VAMPIRE WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO
Three years ago, high school student Veronica Fortune witnessed the brutal murder of her parents. Now armed and dangerous, she sets out to hunt down the very thing that destroyed her life. That is, until she disappears. Spinoza is a private investigator who specializes in finding the missing. He's good at what he does. Damn good. But he's also a recovering alcoholic and a royal mess. Hired to find Veronica, Spinoza won't let his personal demons—or demons of any kind—get in the way of finding the truth about the missing girl. Now following a bizarre set of clues that leads him into stranger and stranger territory, Spinoza is about to come face-to-face with something legendary...and something hungry for blood.

THE VAMPIRE WHO PLAYED DEAD
Two years ago, a woman is murdered in cold blood. Now a son she'd given up for adoption returns to claim his inheritance. To verify his claim, a DNA test is ordered. Except there's one problem. Her grave is empty. Now hired to find the missing body, Spinoza will follow a set of clues that leads him to the unthinkable, a world of nightmares and dreamscapes. A world inhabited by the living and the dead.

THE VAMPIRE IN THE IRON MASK
Spinoza is a private investigator who specializes in finding the missing. He's good at what he does. Damn good. But he's also a recovering alcoholic and a royal mess. Now determined to redeem his troubled soul, Spinoza won't let his personal demons—or demons of any kind—stop him from finding the missing. In this third and final Spinoza mystery, a worker at a popular medieval dinner theater hires Spinoza to find out the identity of one of his co-workers, a co-worker who's never been seen without an iron mask...and who just might be a real prisoner. Spinoza's new client hints that the man in the iron mask is being held without his consent in the bowels of the dinner theater, a forbidden area for the other employees. When Spinoza attends Medievaland, posing as a guest, he doesn't count on bumping into someone from a previous case, nor can he ever forget what he finds when his investigation takes him past his own life tragedy and brings him face-to-face with the vampire imprisoned in the iron mask. But is the vampire someone he should rescue, or fear?
