Back Pain: How to Treat Upper and Lower Back Pain with America's Foremost Expert
Back Pain: How to Treat Upper and Lower Back Pain is written for Medical Professionals as well as patients. This book serves as an educational and discovery guide to help diagnose and treat chronic pain issues. For those on a journey to discover the cause of their pain, this book will lead you on a path to realize something you may have thought to be impossible, "a life without pain."

As a spine pain physician, I meet many patients who have spent years bouncing around the medical system with little to show for their efforts. Often, their previous physicians have told them that:

"Back problems are just part of getting older."
"You’d feel better if you lost weight."
"According to the x-rays, you’re fine."
"Let’s continue physical therapy and see what happens." (Even though nothing’s happening.)
"Here’s another prescription."

Eric is one such patient. When we met, he was forty-two and had suffered from back pain for seventeen years. Despite occasional flare-ups, he led an active life that included golf, softball, skiing, and tennis. The pain was a nuisance, but he could usually manage it with ibuprofen and other over-the-counter medicines.

Six months before he visited our center, Eric’s back problems worsened. At his first appointment with us, he was an 8 on a 0-10 pain scale (with 10 representing intolerable pain). His discomfort was so severe that he could no longer work or even stand long enough to shower. He’d consulted specialists at several university hospitals, including an orthopedic spine surgeon, and wasn't given much hope. The main message he’d heard was that he needed to accept the pain and “learn to live with it.”

Eric: Relief at Last

Eric didn't want to "live with" chronic, debilitating pain. He was relentless about finding answers. Fortunately, he discussed the impasse with his family physician, who referred him to our center.

Understanding a patient’s back pain requires quite a bit of detective work. Clues are sought and suspects eliminated. Eric’s history, physical examination, imaging studies, and lab work showed no red flags of a serious underlying problem like cancer or infection. His medical workup was also negative for extra-spinal problems presenting as “referred” back pain (kidney stones are a common example). This meant his pain most likely originated within his musculoskeletal system—the bones, muscles, cartilage, tendons, discs and joints that support and move the body.

At our clinic, we take a comprehensive approach to diagnosis and treatment rather than focusing on the back alone. In Eric’s case, this was fortunate indeed. A head-toe-examination yielded an important clue: a tender ligament in his left foot. What’s more, his heel-ankle joint was frozen to the point where I was unable to move it with my hands.

"Have you ever sprained this ankle?" I asked.

Eric laughed. "How’d you guess?"

If you are like Eric and want relief from your pain; this book is packed with information that will help you take the mystery out of your back pain. My goal is to help you discover how you can begin a path to greatly reduce and even eliminate chronic pain not only in your back, but also in the other areas in your body you may not realize is a direct result of your back issues.

Duval and the Infernal Machine (Napoleon's Police)
Based on the real life attempt to assassinate Napoleon Bonaparte in 1800.

Invalided out of the French Army, Alain Duval joins the Ministry of Police in Paris, led by the infamous Joseph Fouché.

Newly appointed and off duty, he is strolling through the city when he sees a crowd waiting for Napoleon, the First Consul, not yet Emperor. He is jostled by some men leaving the area in a hurry and shortly afterwards a bomb, the 'Infernal Machine' explodes.

Next day, Duval describes the men to a police artist and joins the hunt for the bombers. Horse-shoes and barrel hoops send him searching all over Paris. Eventually he finds the warehouse used by the bombers and his mentor is killed in the subsequent fight.

Some of the bombers are captured but others escape, then Napoleon puts an abrupt end to the search, blaming others for the outrage.

But the story is not over. Duval falls in love with his mentor's daughter, and together they find another of the bombers, leading to a surprise ending.

It was too cold today to go hiking, but I happened to be out and about running some errands and came back through the park. Some nice scenery. I also saw a snowman and 21 turkeys in the campground.

Abacus
“Mozart’s powerful Requiem eerily resonated through the cold building, giving it a true cathedral feel. Through it’s wide opened mouth, the red-hot burgeoning belly of the furnace could be seen. Hogtied and partially blindfolded, there was no escape for the career felon. If only he had chosen another path in life. But now it was all too late.”

A witness to his parent’s gruesome murder, Detective Sergeant Randall became a hardened, vengeful man with no fear of consequence. A gifted Detective who craved revenge, he was the perfect recruit. Under direction of the Abacus, he led a complex double life, systematically culling the very bad in society, while at the same time in charge of a busy Detective Division.
With a rising body count at the hands of a depraved psychopath, it appeared that Randall’s worlds had collided… or had they?

You will admire Randall, support Randall and question Randall in his quest to right the world’s wrongs and find true inner peace.

Written by former Detective Josh Burton who draws on his years of experience, Abacus’s is as convincing as it is thoroughly entertaining.

Free From Stackpole.
Stackpole puts a book or two up for free periodically, lately every couple of days.  I have read several of their free books. Some interesting stuff. Most of what I have seen is WWII German military history, with varying quality of translation, some other military history from lesser known units, along with some fishing and other outdoors oriented books. Occasionally I have seen some craft type books.

Recommendations for purchasing the ultimate all-around shotgun
The best shot to use for quail, grouse, woodcock, partridge, doves, pheasants, and rabbits
Instruction on handloading to tailor shells to different birds and situations
Hunter's Guide to Shotguns for Upland Game is a valuable reference that educates hunters about how to find the perfect shotgun to match their needs. The book takes a pragmatic approach for the average hunter looking to get the most bang for his buck and shows that hunters don't have to break the bank to buy a versatile shotgun. It discusses the best guns for various species of upland game and examines the all-important criteria for choosing a shotgun: the hunter's physique, preferred action type and gauge, gun features, price range, whether or not he's hunting with dogs, and other possible uses for the gun such as deer hunting or clay target games. Profiles of major manufacturers and models showcase a wide variety of shotguns to give readers a good idea of the relative strengths and weaknesses of available products. Once a hunter has selected a shotgun, he will discover how to use custom loads and make modifications to personalize his gun and improve its performance.

colored sands forest preserve 12-28-13

Some of the trail sections we were on had no human foot prints at all before I went through today. Just deer, an occasional coyote, and beagle prints. Wilma did not seem to mind breaking trail for me. The deer seem to use the trails extensively. Slow going in the 6 inches or so of snow. But it was a good time. Even saw three deer, but they were unwilling to pose for me so no pictures of them. Saw a pheasant and 4 turkeys on our way back home.

I said it was the 29th in the video but really it was the 28th.

Some freebies from Chris Nuttall. Chris is a would be author who hangs out at the Baen slushpile hoping to get a contract that has so far eluded him., He does some good work and some that is a little lacking as far as I am concerned. His SF stuff is a little one dimensional but often still fun to read. I think all of these were posted on Baens' Bar.

 Outside Context Problem
When a UFO crashes near a top secret military base, the American Government realises that aliens have been spying on the human race for years. But even as they rush to unlock the technological secrets in the alien craft, the aliens launched the first step in their plan to invade the Earth and enslave the human race. With a giant mothership approaching the planet and the inhabitants promising peace and plenty, humanity must defeat a vastly superior foe with uncertain motives or lose its freedom forever.

On one side, a powerful alien force…

On the other side, a divided humanity…

The Black Knife
The most dangerous form of magic on Touched – a world where those born with magic wield political power – is necromancy, the art of drawing magical power from the act of murder. It has long been banned and rightfully so, yet the ambitious and power-hungry Duke Herod – intent on placing his posterior upon the Golden Throne – has resurrected the art, planning to use it to destroy the Royal Family and take the Throne for himself.

On the eve of their wedding, Prince Eric and Mistress Hind are forced to flee the Palace as Herod’s forces launch a coup against the Emperor. As they make their way to the only safety left in a world touched by necromancy and darkest magic, they are pursued by Herod’s men, while behind them Herod sinks further into madness. If the necromancer cannot be stopped, the entire world is in terrible danger…

Black Flagged
A graduate of the Department of Defense's experimental Black Flag program, Daniel Petrovich carries a secret he's taken extreme measures to keep buried. A secret hidden in the deepest vaults of the Pentagon.

Someone is trying to raise the fallen program from the ashes and bring Daniel back with it. Someone who holds the key to Daniel's darkest secrets...and has pulled his strings before.

In exchange for the promise of a clean slate, and a chance to keep the life he has built with the woman he loves, Daniel agrees to carry out one final mission: the seemingly uncomplicated assassination of a confirmed terrorist financier.

Daniel's life is about to disintegrate, as he becomes the focus of a relentless federal manhunt, and the target of a ruthlessly vengeful CIA agent. To survive, he'll be forced to release a dark side he'd fought for years to suppress. A dark side critical to his former puppet master's intricate plan to revive the Black Flag program.

Black Flagged lays the foundation for a gritty, unapologetic series exploring the often unceremoniously brutal and serpentine link between covert operations and government agency politics.

Vengeance; at Midway and Guadalcanal, a novel of war. (Aviator)
VENGEANCE IS SECOND IN A TRILOGY SET IN WWII. THE FIRST, PROJECT 7 ALPHA WAS WINNER OF THE HISTORICAL FICTION AWARD 2012 (Gold Medal Award); by the Military Writers Society of America (MWSA):  Action explodes from the pages of Novelist LC Shanle's latest. World War II experienced from the cockpits of fighter aircraft, and through the eyes of men trapped in island Tropical Hells. Written by a retired Naval Aviator and former Paratrooper; the author puts the reader in the F-4F Wildcat and jungle, as warriors engage in a titanic struggle around the globe.
A diverse and rich cast of characters reveal the sacrifice and frustrations of war. A no holds bar accounting of the actual battles, shown through the eyes of the novels characters, uncovers mistakes and even incompetence at the highest levels. Vengeance shows the disastrous results of these decisions, on the lowest common denominator; the war fighter. Closely following the actual battles of Midway and Guadalcanal the reader gets an insider's view so vivid the smell of cordite will hang in the air.
A rare perspective written by an author that flew modern fighters over the historic battlefields, even from the decks of aircraft carriers that fought in the Pacific. A riveting story, Vengeance tells of the impact at an individual level, a personal level; of an entire world at war. From the struggles of a young man in Officer Candidate School facing down a sadistic Drill Instructor; to entire fleets engaging in War At Sea.
Vengeance will pull back the curtain of historical perspective and frame it in reality. The harsh reality will come as a shock to readers who have read of great victories. But know little of the tremendous cost; like fifteen hundred sailors lost in a single nights battle, all five of the Sullivan brothers among them.
To the soldier, sailor or airman: war is about the small unit they are a part of and the struggle not only to stay alive, but protect their comrades. Sometimes, even to avenge their deaths.

Dead, but Not for Long
When the first outbreaks occurred, the reports were quickly stifled. By the time the dead began to walk in Lansing, Michigan, it was already too late to stop the plague.

In the heart of the city, a child with cancer and her caretaker risk their lives to help a security guard and a nurse secure an old hospital.

As the survivors struggle to stay alive, the grid begins to fail.

All the while, the dead fight to get inside.

* * *

As the world crumbles around them, Keith, Lindsey, Jack and a handful of other hospital employees fight to keep their patients alive. Will they work together and become a community or will it all fall apart as different personalities collide?

There is Eric Wapowski, the hospital security guard who is more of a hindrance than a help; Dr. Doune, brain surgeon and sociopath, who has been tasked with the job of researching the plague; and Autumn McAllister, a nine-year-old cancer patient who is old beyond her years.

When Snake and his gang of bikers find out about the hospital, will they want it for themselves? As the city is left to burn, will those that stay be able to make a stand against the ever-growing legion of dead closing in on them?

Dead, but Not for Long is sometimes dark, but there are moments of levity and a message of hope as well as a few surprises along the way. It is not a book about skilled fighters with state-of-the-art weapons, but ordinary people thrust into the darkest of circumstances.

What will they do to stay alive?

Killing Faith (A Gabriel De Sade Thriller, Book 1)

Killing Faith is the first book of the 'Faith' series of novels about an NYPD detective,a former Special Forces operative. Teamed with FBI Special Agent Faith Ward, their methods are always unconventional, often brutal, at times mystical.

When dismembered bodies start to appear in New York City, the search for a serial killer begins. Leading the hunt is Gabriel de Sade, a tough Manhattan detective. What should be a straightforward murder investigation escalates when yet more dismembered bodies are found. A very sick, psychotic murderer is loose on the streets of the city. Yet the case is to become more complicated than he could imagine. The nightmare is just beginning for de Sade, a Delta Force veteran of Afghanistan.

The FBI are also hunting for the serial killer and their evidence points to a Russian Mafiya baron, Grigory Gordieva. The pursuit leads Gabriel to Moscow with an FBI partner, Special Agent Faith Ward. They find themselves pitted against political interference from both American and Russian governments. Yet when they ask for help from the Moscow Militia de Sade finds them both corrupt and on the Mafiya payroll.

Their only assistance comes from an unexpected quarter, a Russian Orthodox Bishop. With his help, de Sade reaches the heart of the Gordieva’s Mafiya operations. The Russian retaliates by kidnapping Faith Ward. With only a discredited Militia detective to help him, he takes on the Moscow Mafiya. De Sade adapts his Delta Force tactics to wage a secret war on the Moscow streets. The action builds to a climax that is shattering and extraordinary.

Cooter Brown offers up an unparalleled collection of over 500 examples of Hillbilly Wisdom, Redneck Observations and Good Ol' Boy logic in "South Mouth". lt's a very funny -- and often insightful -- book.

If things aren't going well: "I'm as bad off as a rubber-nosed woodpecker in a petrified forest."

If a co-worker is lazy: "They call him "blister" because he doesn't show up until the work is done."

If the temperature is falling outside: "It's gonna be colder than a cast iron commode on the shady side of an iceberg."

If a job is frustrating: "It's like trying to nail Jell-O to a tree."

If you' re ready for dinner: "I' m so hungry I could eat a stink bug off a dead skunk."

If someone is less than attractive: "If I had a dog as ugly as him, I' d shave its butt and make it walk backwards."

If your wallet is empty: "If a trip around the world cost a dollar, I couldn't get to the state line."

If you' re describing a winding road: "The road was so crooked you could see your own tail lights."

If someone is acting less than intelligent: "He' s a seven story buildin' with a five story elevator."

Who knows, maybe you'll end up spicing up your conversation with some of colorful language and become a "South Mouth" yourself. Or maybe not. Either way, take it from Cooter Brown, "You'll have a good ol' time."

Executive Actions (The Executive Series)
A Soviet plot has deadly repercussions for modern America.

“Executive Actions is the best political thriller I have read in a long, long time - right up there with the very best of David Baldacci. Gary Grossman has written a masterpiece of suspense, powerfully written and filled with wildly imaginative twists. Get ready to lose yourself in a hell of a story.” —Michael Palmer , New York Times Best Selling Author of Oath of Office

Riding a wave of popular sympathy, Lodge surges forward as the man to beat for incumbent President Morgan Taylor. Secret Service Agent Scott Roarke is ordered by President Taylor to investigate the assassination, and unravels a deadly Soviet plot that has incubated for more than 30 years. Now in the hands of a power hungry Middle Eastern heir to the throne, Agent Roarke must stop a sleeper agent poised to change the course of American policy in the Middle East. Executive Actions is a tense political thriller, where both the Presidency and the Constitution are at stake.

An Expendable Spy
Jack Tate wants his old life back. Five years earlier he'd been shunted out of MI6 and into a British Intelligence backwater, where instead of running high level East German agents he's reduced to snooping night after night on trade unionists and minor public officials...none of whom he believes are a particular threat to The State.

But now he's been offered a way back into the Service. His superiors are willing to sanction his return to MI6 field operations on one condition; that he proves himself worthy by tracking down and eliminating the leadership of a Moscow funded terrorist group and exposing the identity of their KGB handler.

Undercover and working alone Tate knows he's vulnerable. He knows he'll have to kill if he doesn't wish to end up dead himself. And he's also beginning to realize that events and rivalries are conspiring against him and that time isn't on his side.

Gritty yet hauntingly evocative, An Expendable Spy is a classic Cold War tale, set in the late nineteen seventies, that twists and turns from the canals and seedy bars of Amsterdam to the grim backstreets of London to the wilds of the English countryside...always keeping the reader guessing.

[#4 - a short work that seems kind of far fetched.]

ROLLING THUNDER (Wings of War)
They were America's bravest men - seasoned veterans and young daredevil pilots with dreams of glory in the air...Court Bannister, an Air Force captain overshadowed by his famous father, driven to prove his worth to his comrades - and himself...Toby Parker, the brash first lieutenant who gambled his innocence in the flames of war...and Wolf Lochert, the Special Forces major who ventured deep into the jungle to rescue a downed pilot - only to discover a face of the enemy for which he was unprepared.
Rolling Thunder is an explosive portrait of men at war, so authentic and powerful, only a veteran pilot could have written it.
It is the first of the five-book Rolling Thunder series. Next are Steel Tiger, Phantom Leader, Eagle Station, and Storm Flight.

"A taut, exciting tale of good men in a bad war. Berent is the real thing." --- Tom Clancy

"Rolling Thunder is terrific - a novel of exceptional authenticity that hits like a thunderclap. A decorated Vietnam pilot, Mark Berent knows planes and men and battle, and he whirls them around in a story of uncommon strength." W.E.B Griffin

Rosetta (Jim Meade: Martian P.I)
Murder, betrayal, the fate of Humanity... it's all in a day's work for Jim Meade: Martian P.I.

In a slow orbit around the sun, just beyond Mars, a mining colony known as Rosetta houses thousands of Consortium citizens who mine the valuable ore Humanity uses for space travel. Over the last three years, Rosetta has grown exponentially, from a tiny mining colony, into an economic behemoth that threatens the delicate balance of power between The Consortium and Coalition - two nations who are still healing from a devastating nuclear war that turned Earth into a hellscape of hopelessness and despair.

After a prominent scientist for The Consortium dies in an apparent accident, Jim Meade is hired by the victim's family to find out what really happened to their father Dr. Sanjay Sinjakama. There, Meade finds himself caught up in a power struggle between the diabolical CEO of Nebula Mining Dimitri Koschei, and Lazarus Rincon, the charismatic leader of a vicious cult.

With the assistance of his friend and confidant (the beautiful Emeline Hunan), Meade races against the clock to find Sinjakama's murderer and prevent a catastrophic disaster that might mean the end of all life on Earth.

[#11 - its been free before. Has enough reviews that what the reviewers are saying about it is probably meaningful, especially the 1,2, and 3-star reviews. It is difficult to make a book with a far fetched premise plausible enough to make it a good read for me. It takes some very good writing.]

[#13 - been free before - I have not read it. Not exactly a unique premise for a story.]

The Unlikely Savior (The Unlikely Savior Trilogy)
Air Force Sergeant Johnnie Carter awakes bloody and disoriented in the middle of the Nevada desert. The last thing she remembers is being in route to a remote training location when her sedan crashes into a farmer's truck. But now a total stranger swears Johnnie miraculously appeared and saved her ailing baby's life. All Johnnie wants is to escape this personal version of the Twilight Zone, but instead, she is propelled into an unstoppable chain of events teeming with apparent miracles, all of which seem to center around her, although she is not a willing or even conscious participant.

Byron Hoffstedder believes in miracles and he also believes in Johnnie’s gift. He remembers her as a child who drifted through his hometown years before, he also knows what she did. Retired from teaching, he becomes the “Angel Tracker” for a national tabloid and he has an ulterior motive. Finally, he gets the call: a “soldier angel” named Johnnie reportedly saved a baby’s life. The story delivers far more than the teacher-turned-reporter dares to imagine. Byron’s findings validate his hopes; he resigns from the tabloid and narrows his search, stunned by the magnitude of what he finds.

Thousands of miles away and worlds apart from Johnnie or Byron, U.S. President Wing Liang is in the midst of a global political implosion. Hesitant to further the conflict with military action or sanctions, he seeks a way to save the world from itself. In short, he needs a miracle.

As she encounters an eclectic cast of characters ranging from circus workers and unspeakable criminals to space shuttle astronauts, the unlikely savior is catapulted toward her destiny. Bizarre events unveil a force of unbelievable capacity and Johnnie Carter appears to be on a rapid course to save the country, if not mankind. And in the process...she just might save herself.
