Pecatonica Prairie Path 7-28-13

Wilma and I have not been out hiking in a while due to the high temperatures. But it was nice on the 28th so we went for a nice hike. I chose the Pecatonica Prairie Path because I read an article recently saying the county had finished working on it.

We parked at Sumner Park in Pecatonica and walked west. We went all the way to N. Farwell Bridge Road. Base Camp called it 6.7 miles round trip.

It was nice going out - breeze, upper 60s. Wilma found the river refreshing, both behind the Fairgrounds and at the bridge where we turned around.

Coming back it was warmer, less of a breeze and a little buggy.

But, we had a good time.

The path is paved inside of Pecatonica until one gets to the west side of the fairgrounds. Then it is hard packed crushed stone. At the county line it becomes a grass path. There were weeds growing as high as ten feet along both sides of the path where it was crushed stone or grass, but very passable. The bridges have been rebuilt on the Winnebago County side, and now have handrails. They are in poor, but safe condition in Stephenson County.

Looking west from where we turned around though, it appears like it had not been mowed recently. Might have been OK on foot, but maybe not for bikes.

[#16 - 2nd day. Far fetched, but might be interesting.]

From Publishers Weekly
Mayer follow up Eyes of the Hammer with a pulsing techno-thriller set in June 1989. As Chinese students are dying in Tiananmen Square, the U.S. stages Dragon SIM-13--a routine computer exercise involving a simulated Special Forces raid on a Chinese oil pipeline. But the program has been written by Doctor Meng, a refugee determined to strike a blow against his onetime tormentors in Beijing, and Sgt. Dave Riley and his Green Beret A-team find themselves actually in China, confronting disaster when a helicopter crash leaves half the men stranded in hostile territory. Mayer, an expert on special warfare operations, convincingly presents a situation in which no one in authority can quite believe the sudden connection between computer screens and real life. He equally successfully demonstrates how lower-echelon uncritical obedience to orders can make sense individually but add up to absurdity. The book's greatest strength, however, is its story line. In particular, the final rescue mission--featuring a hotshot female helicopter pilot--is a nail-biter in the best tradition of adventure fiction.
Copyright Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Library Journal
Meng, a Chinese computer expert working for a top-secret American facility at Fort Meade, specializes in simulation activities for Special Forces. When he decides to make simulated Dragon SIM-13 real, the buttons he pushes set up an elaborate invasion of mainland China to destroy an oil pipeline. Captains Mitchell and Riley head the team flying in on two helicopters. When one of the helicopters crashes, the repercussions are enormous--no one in the States knows about a real invasion, except Meng; and very few in the Far East have any knowledge. A daring rescue by pilot Jean Long, wife of Mitchell, produces a climax with enough suspense and action to satisfy the most jaded of thriller fans. The author of Eyes of the Hammer delivers another rousing tale.

Panic (A Leopold Blake Mystery / Thriller)
Swift. Silent. Deadly.

Leopold Blake, expert criminology consultant for the FBI, had his weekend all planned out - and it didn't involve dealing with a murdered senator, a high-profile kidnapping, and at least half a dozen near-death experiences. Three politicians have been murdered in as many weeks, all expertly dispatched, and only Leopold can get to the bottom of it. Unfortunately, as all hell breaks loose on the streets of New York City, he soon finds himself the next target of a powerful enemy who wants him silenced. Permanently.

Against the backdrop of political corruption and murder, Leopold and his team must fight for their lives to uncover the truth before it's too late. Panic is the first novel in the Leopold Blake series of thrillers, which can be read and enjoyed in any order.

Camelot's Cousin: An Espionage Thriller (Spies and Intrigue/Kennedy Assassination)
[#9. 2nd day. Another crack at the Kennedy assassination.]

Fossil River
Fossil fuel has an ageless affinity with dinosaurs. To create oil, dinosaurs died. Now, in this riveting action thriller, the tables are turning!

The perfect energy storm is sweeping over the United States: Japan’s Fukushima nuclear plant meltdown has paralyzed nuclear expansion globally, BP’s Gulf of Mexico oil spill has stalled deep water drilling, Arab countries are in turmoil causing doubt about access to future oil, hurricanes hitting the Gulf’s oil rigs and refineries have increased due to global warming, and the nation’s Strategic Oil Supply is riding on empty.

As the energy storm intensifies, the nation’s access to Arab oil, once supplying over sixty percent of our fossil fuel, is being threatened causing citizens to panic for lack of gas at the pumps, stranding cars across the country and inciting riots.

The United States must find new sources of domestic fossil fuel urgently or face an energy crisis that will plunge the nation into a deep depression, much worse than that of 1929.

At the last moment of desperation, the U.S. discovers the world’s largest fossil fuel deposit, in a remote mountain range revealed by glacier thaw within Alaska’s Noatak National Preserve surrounding six and a half million acres.

Preventing access to the oil is a colony of living fossil dinosaurs that will protect its territory to the death.

In preliminary civilian and military scouts, nobody gets out alive; nobody can identify the predator--until Dr. Kimberly Fulton, Curator of Paleontology at New York’s Museum of Natural History, is flown into the nearly-inaccessible area by Scott Chandler, the Marine veteran helicopter pilot who’s the Park’s Manager of Wildlife. After page after compelling page of non-stop action, all hell breaks loose when Fulton’s teenage son and his girlfriend vanish into the Park.

Will the nation’s military be jeopardized for lack of mobility fuel, and will Americans nationwide run out of gas and be stranded, or will the U.S. Marines succeed in penetrating this remote mountain range in northwestern Alaska to restore fossil fuel supplies in time to save the nation from the worst energy catastrophe in recorded history?

Paleo Breakfast Recipes: For Busy Moms and Dads
Looking for some tasty Paleo breakfast recipes?

This book has you covered. You'll find everything from frittatas, smoothies and scrambles to muffins, pancakes and other baked goodness. Here are a sample of some recipes you'll find:

Summer Surprise Blueberry Muffins
Biting into these muffins reminds us of walking through a primordial forest and stumbling on a dewy, glistening patch of fresh blueberries. How could you help but gobble up every juicy, surprising morsel? We think you’ll love the way the berries form little pockets of sweetness throughout the dough.

Arizona Dawn Sweet Potato Frittata
If a meal seems more appetizing to you when it’s beautiful to look at, prepare to salivate. Not only does this dish taste like the best of wild, Southwest American cuisine, it also incorporates the gorgeous colors of the Southwest landscape: red (sweet potatoes) like the towering rocks, green (bell pepper) like mountain pine, and yellow (egg) of the glorious morning sun. Great for special occasion brunch or first course.

Solstice Spice Pancakes
Don’t wait until Halloween to try these magical pancakes. The earthy nutmeg, barky cinnamon, and snappy ginger evoke memories of pumpkin pie, autumn harvest, and huddling together before a roaring bonfire.

And plenty more...

Camelot's Cousin: An Espionage Thriller (Spies and Intrigue/Kennedy Assassination)
50 Years After the Kennedy Assassination, We Know When and Where--Now a Spy Novel May Explain WHY...

When a Dad tries to dig a hole in his Northern Virginia yard to bury the remains of the family pet, he chances upon a mysterious briefcase. Its contents include a journal with cryptic writing. He turns to his friend, and boss, Templeton Davis, a Rhodes scholar, popular national radio talk show host, and best-selling author of spy novels and history books, for help figuring out what he's found. They soon realize that they possess materials concealed more than 60 years earlier before by Soviet intelligence and espionage agent, Kim Philby--and also clues to the last great secret of the Cold War. There was another highly placed spy. Someone never discovered--until now. This traitor had unique access to the White House, and was perfectly positioned to influence President John F. Kennedy as he faced challenge after challenge in the era now remembered as Camelot.

Templeton Davis becomes obsessed with a story so many found in the spy books he loves to read and write. And some of those very espionage spy thrillers come in handy. The trail of mystery and suspense leads to a picturesque town in Vermont, the streets of New York City, the corridors of power in Washington, DC, and most importantly, Oxford, England. He learns that the beautiful city of spires on the Thames was once also a city of spies.

The Oxford spies may never have reached the level of public notoriety as those from that other British academic stronghold--Cambridge. But clearly the story had never been completely known--or told. And it was a very dangerous mine of intelligence and espionage detail in which to dig, a fact borne out by a couple of suspicious deaths left in the wake of Templeton Davis's travels.

Davis discovers that during the Cuban Missile Crisis, secrets were being betrayed at the highest levels. And what he learned also connected to a time of great sorrow for mankind--the Kennedy assassination.

At a crucial moment, Templeton Davis develops a bond borne of necessity with a beautiful young woman from Russia, someone with her own secrets. And when what she knows is combined with what the famous broadcaster has learned, the two unlikely heroes find themselves in danger, yet poised to rock the world. Camelot's Cousin: An Espionage Thriller is a page-turner for readers who enjoy suspense thrillers and mysteries.

CONNECTED
Brief Synopsis
CONNECTED is a speculative fiction thriller with touches of science and philosophy, which reached No.1 in Amazon UK's Bestseller lists for both Thrillers and Science Fiction within 5 days of release.

Beginning with the funeral of a renowned classical violinist in a sleepy rural hamlet in the Lake District, a former theoretical physicist tries to make sense of his brother's suicide. Across the country, a university student, enjoying the unexpected attentions of an enigmatic seductress, is disturbed when his best friend falls to his death from the thirteenth floor of a neighbouring campus tower block.

As each tries to unravel the mystery behind the apparent suicides, they are drawn into an obsessive search for a computer-generated fractal video sequence, with startling effects on human consciousness, and which might just pave the way for discovery of the ultimate Theory of Everything.

However, they are not the only ones to have seen the potential of this mind-altering video, and soon find themselves in a desperate race against time with gangsters from the shadowy worlds of sex, drugs, cyber-crime, and massively multi-player on-line gaming.

Science Content
Although, as the reviews testify, CONNECTED has been enjoyed by many with no background in computer science, Mandelbrot Fractal geometry, string theory, quantum physics or brain science, those with some interest or knowledge in these areas seem to have particularly enjoyed the book.
One reason for this appears to be that most of these references are actually based on fact. Of course, some readers have preferred to skim these sections, and claim that this did not detract from the story. Others have appreciated the scientific detail and fidelity, and some have even thanked the author for explaining such things in a way that enabled them to learn something new.

Philosophy, Science and Religion
Although CONNECTED is mostly enjoyed as a fast-paced mystery thriller, it is also, to a limited extent, about the inevitable conflict between science and religion. The two main male protagonists happen to be atheist, and some of the dialogue explores the different thoughts and attitudes concerning some of life’s deeper questions. These include the origins of the universe, the nature of consciousness, and whether there could be life after death. Again these philosophical references to faith and atheism are few, and mostly quite short, but all are crucial to the story.

Setting and slang
CONNECTED is a contemporary novel, set entirely in England. As the story unfolds through two converging plot threads, the action switches between a fictitious village in the Lake District, the University of Essex in Colchester (an old Roman town about 60 miles north-east of London), Bracknell (a newer suburban town some 40 miles west of London), and North London.
Consequently, there is some British slang and occasional use of bad language (e.g. a few instances of the F-word etc.) in keeping with the age and background of the characters.

Why Connected?
Years ago, while the author was at university, a fellow student had a breakdown and was admitted to the local psychiatric hospital. A few, who knew him well, went to visit and reported that he’d subsequently lost the plot and was gabbling incomprehensibly of having found the answer to life, the universe and everything.
While most people seemed consumed with sadness and pity at this, the author’s first thought was, “What if he really had discovered some universal truth?” Although never seriously believing that he had, it was on that day that the seed of an idea lodged in his young brain – a seed that years later would germinate into the drafting of the first three chapters of CONNECTED from a cabin in the French Alps.

[#5. As brief synopsis go, it is not real brief.  A 3-star review says "My first issue is the way the paragraphs are formatted into large chunks of text, sometimes as long as a page, and often without any indentations at the start. The large text blocks made for a cumbersome reading experience, and my attention would end up drifting halfway through the page." This kind of thing is not uncommon with self published works, where there is no professional editing to keep the writer on track. It has a fair number of 4 and 5-star reviews by people who apparently do not care about the potential editing issues. Such things do bug me though. YMMV.]

Cherry Bomb - A Thriller (Jack Daniels Mysteries)
At the end of Fuzzy Navel, J. A. Konrath surprised readers with an agonizing cliffhanger: One of Lieutenant Jacqueline "Jack" Daniels's loved ones is dead. But who? Readers were left clamoring to know more.

Cherry Bomb, the sixth Jack Daniels mystery, opens at the funeral. While Jack stands graveside, tears in her eyes, her cell phone rings. It's the killer, escaped maniac Alex Kork, taunting Jack, drawing her ever further into a twisted game of cat and mouse. Because while Alex is more than willing to kill random victims, Jack is her true prey. But which woman wants revenge more?

Cherry Bomb is J. A. Konrath's most gripping novel of suspense yet--filled with twists and turns that will keep readers on the edge of their seats.

Collapse (New America-Book One)
BOOK ONE in the NEW AMERICA series.

What would it take for the United States to fall from within? In a not too distant future, America is put to the test. With the American people deep in The Second Great Depression and two of the most powerful hurricanes on record to contend with, the United States is in no condition to deal with hidden terrorists on its soil, maniacal politicians, and the most formidable military threat the world has seen since the Third Reich.

This is the story of three men from three very different walks of life: Howard Beck, the world's richest man, also diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome; Richard Dupree, ex-Navy SEAL turned escaped convict; and Maxwell Harris, a crippled, burned-out chief of police of a small Texas town. At first, they must overcome their own struggles and fight for their survival against impossible odds. In the end, the unlikely trio must band together to save their beloved country from COLLAPSE.

Empires topple. Nations crumble. Civilization is fragile. In 2027, America will fall.

Noted Ranger historian Robert W. Black turns his attention to a trio of the Confederacy's--and America's--most infamous raiders and cavalrymen: John Singleton Mosby, John Hunt Morgan, and Nathan Bedford Forrest. Combining speed, mobility, and boldness, these three soldiers struck critical blows against the Union during the Civil War, including Morgan's notorious 1863 raid that penetrated farther north than any other uniformed Confederate force. Forbidden The Stars (The Interstellar Age Book 1)
At the end of the 21st century, a catastrophic accident in the asteroid belt has left two surveyors dead. There is no trace of their young son, Alex Manez, or of the asteroid itself.

On the outer edge of the solar system, the first manned mission to Pluto, led by the youngest female astronaut in NASA history, has led to an historic discovery: there is a marker left there by an alien race for humankind to find. We are not alone!

While studying the alien marker, it begins to react and, four hours later, the missing asteroid appears in a Plutonian orbit, along with young Alex Manez, who has developed some alarming side-effects from his exposure to the kinetic element they call Kinemet.

From the depths of a criminal empire based on Luna, an expatriate seizes the opportunity to wrest control of outer space, and takes swift action.

The secret to faster-than-light speed is up for grabs, and the race for interstellar space begins!

I had not noticed this previously as it does not jump out at one from the front, but is real obvious from a side view. Fran pointed out where the wind had actually blown a fence panel off the post it was attached to.

Container Gardening: The Beginner's Guide to Planting a Vegetable & Herb Garden without a Backyard (Quick and Easy Series)
How can someone with only a limited amount of space, time, and resources possibly begin to grow their own food?
Container Gardens!

What exactly is a container garden?
These can be described in many ways, but are essentially gardens that are grown in containers and vessels that are big enough and deep enough to provide a suitable replacement for the natural soil and garden environment.

Is it hard to start container gardening?
Absolutely not!  Without any experience, gardening knowledge, or the proverbial green thumb, you can start growing all kinds of delicious foods. Whether you have a tidy little back yard, or you are an urban dweller with only a few large and sunny windows, you can start growing vegetables, herbs, and a few fruits that can supply you with at least a bit of your own food supply.

Why start container gardening?
Not only will these foods taste better that you grow on your own, but they are going to be more nutritious due to their freshness and lack of commercial pesticides, fertilizers, and irradiation treatments. They will also save you a lot more money than you might think, and will probably green up your diet a great deal more too.

What types of containers can I use to start gardening?
Generally, you can use almost any type of container as long as there is:

Enough room for the plant;
Enough space to add drainage;
The ability to drain evenly; and
Is not made of a material that poses a threat because it might "leech" chemicals into the soil and then into the plant.
What's so great about your vegetable container gardening eBook?
We walk you step-by-step through all the basics and cover in detail everything there is to know about:

Soil
Water
Sunlight & Heat
Air
Space
Seeds
garden growing strategies
choosing the right location for your vegetable/herb/fruit container garden
seeding and re-potting

gardening maintenance
gardening challenges
& much more!

Eyes of the Hammer (The Green Beret Series)
From NY Times Bestselling Author, former Green Beret and West Point Graduate, Bob Mayer.

What if US Army Green Berets led by Dave Riley must take on not only criminal drug traffickers but also betray their own government?

A US Army Special Forces team carrying sterilized weapons and unmarked uniforms is on its way to Colombia. The mission: conduct covert, unilateral raids to destroy cocaine processing laboratories.

Of course nothing is as it seems especially once the CIA gets involved. Throw in an Israeli mercenary, betrayal and double-dealing in Washington and the team soon finds itself wondering what the real mission is.

“A scorcher of a novel. Mayer had me hooked from the very first page.” Stephen Coonts

“Exciting and authentic! Author Mayer, a Green Beret himself, gave me a vivid look at the world of the Army’s Special Forces. His portrayal of Green Beret operations and techniques takes you deep into the world of Special Operations.” W.E.B. Griffin.

From the Farm to Fast Food: My Adventures During the Great Depression and Beyond

How about dig your own well or cut ice out of a river to cool your food? Kill, skin, dry, and can animals to feed your family? You never know. In a post-apocalyptic world like the one in the HUNGER GAMES (or the one we may face in the future) this is information you might want to know. Believe it or not, there are people living in the modern world today who do know how to do these things. Ray Schmidt is one of them. While growing up on a farm in western North Dakota, Schmidt experienced the hardships of the Great Depression firsthand. Like his parents, he became a farmer. PLEASE. Do everyone a favor and write an Amazon review if you end up reading a book (or trying to and giving up in disgust). It does not have to be much. Just tell what you think of the book. By the way, many times I have found the 1 and 2 star reviews on self published works to be far more revealing about the book than the more stellar reviews.

Most times these books are only free for a day or two, so you have to grab them while you can. Worry about whether you really want to read it later if it seems interesting. And be careful, they can change from free to not free at any time. I have also decided to list books for no more than 3 days in a row to avoid cluttering up the posts, unless there is some reason I think the book deserves extra attention.

Every dog deserves a forever home, and after being mistreated and given up several times, Wrigley has finally found his. The good-natured, smart mutt now spends his days as the house dog at SunRidge Assisted Living, comforting and doting on forty-five seniors. Happily, Wrigley has free run of the place, going where he senses he's needed, but his preferred spot is beside his favorite resident, Marjorie Thompson.

A big shift comes to SunRidge, when a cranky curmudgeon named Walter Kepson moves in across the hall from Marjorie. Having arrived reluctantly, at the urging of his son, Walter can't stand Wrigley or anything else for that matter.

But life has a way of making strange bedfellows, and after a series of dramatic, unforeseen events, Walter becomes indebted to Wrigley. His initial method of repayment—giving Wrigley lots of treats—perfectly suits the food-motivated house dog. But Wrigley is interested in more than just satisfying his unending appetite. He senses that Walter needs him and sees the old man as being similar to a neglected shelter dog, who if shown love, will reciprocate it.

Before long, Wrigley softens Walter in a way only a dog can, and eventually helps bridge the gap between him and his son. Walter responds in kind by allowing Wrigley onto his furniture, and ultimately, into his heart.

Told in Wrigley's voice, All That Ails You is an endearing story about the power of a dog's love, when we need it most, and healing the strained relationship between a parent and a child before it's too late.

1908... Siberia... A tiny comet rips through Earth's atmosphere and explodes above the Tunguska region of Siberia, instantly engulfing thousands of square acres of the mostly desolate region. The explosion is heard for hundreds of miles, the light of the comet seen halfway across the globe. Had the comet hit a few hours earlier in a more populated area, millions would have been killed...

A century later, another comet - this one hundreds of times bigger and more powerful - encounters a black hole in deep space and is pushed onto a new, deadly course leading straight to Earth...

A small group of humans - including the President of the United States, a former astronaut and a middle school science teacher - discovers the existence of this potentially deadly comet and keep its existence hidden from the rest of the world. Although the group - which calls itself the Inner Circle - has twelve years to deal with the problem, they will need every second of that time. Not only must they figure out a way to avert this crisis, they must also start to make plans in case they can't avoid a catastrophe that could annihilate humankind...

Unfortunately, she realizes that they are now on opposite sides of an escalating war between the Commonwealth Union of Planets and an increasingly dangerous rebel organization.

In trying to find who is threatening her life, they discover a plot to destroy a distant planet - a world inhabited by creatures that are the key to Nova's survival - and a conspiracy that threatens the stability of the Union Commonwealth.

Ratcatcher (John Purkiss 1)
[#31. 3rd day. Pretty far fetched premise. But. it still has some promise.]

This Time Tomorrow
Two brothers. One woman. A nation at war.

A compelling story of war, brotherly love, passion and betrayal during World War One.

Vast in scope and intimate in the portrayal of three lives swept along by circumstances, 'This Time Tomorrow' moves from the drawing rooms of Edwardian London to the trenches of the Western Front and to the uncertainty of post-war Britain.

When Guy Searight volunteers to fight with the British army in the early days of World War One, he leaves behind his girlfriend, Mary. While away fighting, Guy’s younger brother, Jack, seizes an opportunity to woo Mary for himself.

Forthright and self assured, Guy has always looked out for his confident but frail brother and blithely promises his fretting mother that he’ll look out for him when Jack’s turn comes to join up. But embittered by Jack’s betrayal, Guy vows that when Jack has to face the horrors of war for himself, he won’t be there to look after him.

When the brothers are reunited in the trenches of the Western Front, their thoughts are both with Mary. As Jack buckles under the strain of war, can Guy sustain his anger and allow his brother to suffer alone?

A shocking event, catastrophic in its intensity and barbaric in its conclusion, forces Guy to re-evaluate his relationship with his brother, with Mary and ultimately himself.

'This Time Tomorrow' is a tale of love, loss and longing.

"Heart-stopping," Kathryn Atwood, author.
"Not to be missed ... masterful," Sinead Fitzgibbon, author.

Rupert Colley is the founder, editor and writer of the highly successful History In An Hour series of ebooks, published by HarperCollins. 'This Time Tomorrow' is his second novel.
