Castle Rock State Park 11-2-12

Wilma and I did 5.6 miles here today according to Base Camp. We did mostly trails that are on the trail map but also did some mowed paths in the north end of the park that are maybe for hunting access, or possibly fire breaks, and finished on a ski trail. It is a nice park. The place seems well maintained and there are plenty of hiking opportunities. We stayed on the NE end of the park. Never got to the trails on the SW end. Maybe some other time. We did see a deer but he took off before we could get any video of him.

There was a creek for Wilma. We crossed it twice on the western most trail loop. She could only get down to it on one of the crossings, and then we came upon it again as it abuts the ski trail we came back on.

Several of the trails we were on were labeled as both hiking and skiing that did not seem like anyone could cross country ski on them as they were quite steep. It is pretty hilly terrain. Lots of grade change. The 5.6 miles took us over 3 and a half hours.

I am not sure the GPS was working 100% of the time as the GPS track log does not match up well with the park trail map and there are a few segments shown as straight that really were not. Maybe the park map is wrong. It would not be the first time. It does show a more or less general direction of the trails even if it is not perfect. Maybe next time I go I will stick religiously to the trails on the trail map and see where the GPS says they really are.
