Free Kindle Books 8-6-13

PLEASE. Do everyone a favor and write an Amazon review if you end up reading a book (or trying to and giving up in disgust). It does not have to be much. Just tell what you think of the book. By the way, many times I have found the 1 and 2 star reviews on self published works to be far more revealing about the book than the more stellar reviews. Reviewers need gratification too, so if a review is helpful to you, please click on the voting button to indicate it was helpful.

Most times these books are only free for a day or two, so you have to grab them while you can. Worry about whether you really want to read it later if it seems interesting. And be careful, they can change from free to not free at any time. I have also decided to list books for no more than 3 days in a row to avoid cluttering up the posts, unless there is some reason I think the book deserves extra attention.

From the top 100 free list
As is typical, there are also several religious and recipe books on the list today, along with the usual assortment of romance, porn and near porn. I don't call them out because they don't interest me. Click on the link above and search through the Free List Tab if you are interested in such books.

October 21: just an ordinary day, unless you’re a former rock star…

The sole survivor of a plane crash…

A private investigator working out of a camper…

For Nicholas Colt, October 21 is an unlucky day. A day for nightmares. It always has been, and this year is no exception.

Someone is brutally murdering the offspring of an anonymous sperm donor, and Colt’s missing client is next on the list. With less than four days to find the young man—and, with a pair of drug-addicted study partners, a violent motorcycle gang, a stalker ex-girlfriend, and a host of other obstacles standing in his way—Colt faces the most challenging and deadly case of his life.

[#2. Appears to be the prequel to a series.]

"Brilliant! A plot with more twists than barbed wire. Vivid
characters. Life-and-death stakes. A provocative political theme. Erika
Holzer delivers everything that a thriller fan could possibly want
in this revised edition of her novel Double Crossing."-----Robert Bidinotto, best-selling author of Hunter. [Double Crossing reviews are at "Editorial Reviews."]

Caught in a web of dangerous intrigue, Dr. Kiril Andreyev plans his desperate escape from Soviet tyranny to freedom in the West.
But when his friend's escape attempt ends in flames, Kiril finds his life threatened by a ruthless KGB officer.
Kiril's last chance rests on a visiting American heart surgeon and his journalist wife. But even as Kiril plots his escape, he finds that his life depends on his materialistic mistress, on the rivalries of Soviet and East German intelligence agents, and on accidental betrayals by those he trusts most.
The story builds to a climax in a deadly confrontation on Glienicker Bridge, linking East Germany and West Berlin.
Will Dr. Kiril Andreyev succeed in his lifelong quest for freedom--and at what cost?

[#41. Might be a little dated.]

The Survivors: Book One (Life After War)
[#48. 3rd day. This book has been free a number of times before. I tried to read it once. I gave it one star. The series does seem to have a lot of fans though.]

[#49. 3rd day. I read a few pages after I got it. It did not grab my interest.]

Synbat (The Green Beret)
[#53. 2nd day. I got this in February of 2012 as a free Kindle download but have yet to read it. It does seem a little far fetched, and that might be why I never got around to it. Or, just that there is only so much reading time. Mayer is a very solid author and I have enjoyed a number of his books, some free, some purchased.]

Slow Burn: Zero Day, Book 1
A new flu strain has been spreading across Africa, Europe, and Asia. Disturbing news footage is flooding the cable news channels. People are worried. People are frightened. But Zed Zane is oblivious.

Zed needs to borrow rent money from his parents. He gets up Sunday morning, drinks enough tequila to stifle his pride and heads to his mom’s house for a lunch of begging, again.

But something is wrong. There’s blood in the foyer. His mother’s corpse is on the living room floor. Zed’s stepdad, Dan is wild with crazy-eyed violence and attacks Zed when he comes into the house. They struggle into the kitchen. Dan’s yellow teeth tear at Zed’s arm but Zed grabs a knife and stabs Dan, thirty-seven times, or so the police later say.

With infection burning in his blood, Zed is arrested for murder but the world is falling apart and he soon finds himself back on the street, fighting for his life among the infected who would kill him and the normal people, who fear him.
